I think there's a reason why leadership is considered an "art"...

Each person/situation calls for it's own way of handling things.

For instance, if a member of an elite team fuched up, the silence of the other team members would be way, way worse than a DI reeming out a basic recruit.

If a member of an elite team had an ND he would be an ex-member of an elite team. This would be analogous to Legion divorcing his wife for her mistake.

Military leaders are far more tolerant of mistakes from FNG's than they are of high speed, low drag ninja types. Have an ND in one of those circles, and you're shunned until the paperwork is complete to ship you the hell out of there.

I would say that between the two, a good verbal dress down is a lot more forgiving and tolerant. In any case, handling it with kit gloves and glossing over the incident is the worst thing that one can do. IMO.

People do have accidents, i understand that. Truth is, most experienced shooters have had one close call or almost close call they can relate in a moment of confidence. But people need to learn from them, no ifs ands or buts, because firearms are quite efficient at blowing peoples g-damn brains out when handled carelessly.

What is hurt feelings compared to having to put half your wifes foot in your pocket as you rush her to the hospital in the hopes the doctors can reattach it?

I am sure i sound like a heartless prick, but no trainee of mine has ever shot themself. (actually, i have to say "that i know of." Lord only knows where the nameless faces i trained or supervised on a range have all ended up, not that it was ever all that many anyway.)
