MS Frontpage?
 

I'm going to setup a small web site. Simple to moderate stuff. Should I learn Frontpage or is there something else around these days that is better? I've done a homepage in HTML so I sort of know my way around these things. The site is hosted on a machine that has frontpage extentions.

I've heard "Dreamweaver" is much better than "Front Page". I used "FP" to do my site but it is very basic.

Frontpage makes messy code. Might as well use Word and export as HTML.

Try Mozzila Composer, part of the Mozzila Suite and it's uhm, free.

If you have Frontpage, use it. You can always modify the code since you know HTML. It's pretty simple to use. The frontpage extensions are an added bonus since you can use frontpage to upload the site vs an FTP program.

I downloaded the Mozilla suite (SeaMonkey). Where do I find Composer on it?!?

+1 for Dreamweaver. It's a very powerful program particularly for dealing with CSS! If you get it I suggest using the book "Dreamweaver CS3 Hands-On Training" to learn it, I found it much better then the Classroom in a book that Adobe outs out, You can find the book here: http://tinyurl.com/5uj9sp

I looked up Dreamweaver CS3, it looks like I'd have to pay $400 for the program, does that sound correct?

Is that a "consumer" kind of product, or do you have to have IT experience to use it?

To get to composer, under "file" there should be a "new" and a "web page" (or similar) option. Only thing I don't like about it (and I love it 'cause its Free) is the lack of site management and how it tends to hard code references to your local file system in the code.

I'd say spend the $ for Dreamweaver and download The Gimp (also Free and free - gimp.org) and buy a good Gimp book (there have been reviews on slashdot.org). The help/tutorial in dreamweaver is great - do the tutorial before thinking about your site.

A couple of questions on Dreamweaver:

1. Is it ok to buy it off ebay? I see some sellers with lots of good feedback selling new, in the box programs for around $50 less than sticker.

2. Will I be able to understand it, being pretty much an IT newbie? For example, when you say "lack of site management and how it tends to hard code references to your local file system in the code" I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. When I read the specs for dreamweaver, I don't know what "CSS" is.

I'm willing to spend some time learning, but I kinda need to have a basic website up in a week or two.

We buy educational pricing here, and before Adobe took over Macromedia, DW was $50/copy for us...

DW is great, and the tutorial in it is fantastic. Well worth doing.

NVU...it's a good dreamweaver knockoff...some code bloat but not unmanagable and very powerful.

Dreamweaver has a design and code building section, so if you dont know much code, you can use design mode, and do anything you can with knowing code. It is not a simple 'drag and drop' application, but it is the BEST one out there today.

Stay away from FP.

Stay away from FrontPage! Even MS gave up on it.
I have a friend that got burned buying Dreamweaver on EBay a while back.

I'm using Frontpage 2003 because " the price was right". I hear dreamweaver is better, but I won't pay the price. I'm learning still but frontpage does work for me. Right now, all I'm using for a site is one of their templates. Check out www.airbostongraphics.com to see what I've put together. According to the latest book I bought Missing Manual for Frontpage 2003, MS Frontpage gets a bad wrap and the 2003 and later versions are comparable to dreamweaver and such.

There is a book out... Creating Webpages for Dummies. It comes with a CD that has (if I remember correctly) 4 trial web developer programs. With this you can try before you plunk down your money.

Tried to move to Dreamweaver from Front page and could not. First I did not know how to work DW and had no friends or anyone who would tutor me.

Still have the program and hear that its very good but I could not make heads nor tails of it so reverted back to Frontpage.

Do you want to part with your copy of DW? I've got a fresh crisp $50 for you if you do.
