Dave, check out this guys site www.stantheradarman.com some good info. He charges $517 to fight your ticket. Those CHP have been out in force lately (trying to help the state budget crisis?)

Craig, I really don't know how else to put this - I CAN'T AFFORD an attorney! I can't afford the vet bills or the fine and am almost at the point of telling the court to throw me in jail for a few days.

If I went to court, I would be my own lawyer and yes I could manage. 3/4 of my family are lawyers, sometimes, it's like living in a court.

Care to say which of many you used?

Don't ask why but I'm looking for recommendations.

There are all kinds of procedural things that you can do to get out of a ticket. It's a lot of work, but it can work and often does. Look online and do some research. There are some specific legal terms and documents that you will need to deal with as well. Here is a summary:

1) ask for a continuance
2) ask again
3) change venue to the county seat (allowed in CA afaik).
4) when in court, there is a process by which you ask the judge for a prosecutor. The judge is supposed to be impartial and is not supposed to question the witnesses (cops).

Many times the cop will not show at the county seat, nor will there be a prosecutor available. If there is, expect the full fine =)

I am not an attorney and this should not be construed as legal advice. Do your own homework. YMMV

I have looked into this, but this means that I have to spend a day driving almost all the way to Big Bear to get photos for evidence. Even in the Toyota, it will cost me a bit of $$ to go there and back. And, I'd have to do this twice.

I'm not sure what you mean by switching the venue to a county seat? Can I get it moved to L.A. county? If I could get it moved to Van Nuys, I doubt the CHP officer would be able to show up. :D

What county were you in when you got the ticket? Every county has a Seat (i.e. capital of the county) where county business is conducted. The City of Los Angeles is the Seat of Los Angeles County.

I'm not an attorney, and this is not legal advice. YMMV

Here's how I do it in Missouri.

Get ticket - usually for speeding, running yellowish/red lights, etc.
Fax or email ticket to lawyer.
Pay ammended violation for littering or loud muffler - now original fine is doubled + court costs.
No points on license and moving violation is not reported to insurance company.
Owe lawyer a favor, usually ballgame tickets or a nice bottle of booze.

Usually happens twice a year - some years less.
Had 2 this year already. One was for speeding in a construction zone (42 in a 30 )and I'm in the construction business. I had not reached the place where the work was being completed but the officer didn't seem to care. I even showed him my hard hat.
