Opel GT - Pic - what's up with 'em?

They are fun little cars, but are notorious for rusting through almost everywhere!
The first thing to go is the floor-pans, then rocker panels. After that the fenders are quick to follow. Every once and a while you can find a nicely restored one that someone has spent the time to do correctly. More often than not you find sheet-aluminum and bondo specials. It's really sad, as they make great light body drag cars! There are a couple of them here around town. I actually almost bought one a couple of years ago. Maybe when I shorten up the "to-do" list I'll pick one up!

my mom had one when i was little. as a six year old i remember the lack of legroom. and they were notorious for exploding when rear ended. but a fun car otherwise.

Ahh, okay. It's a great looking car although it looks a little odd that the air cleaner would be asymmetric like that. Don't know too much about 'em except that in Germany there are a lot of Opels on the road of different varieties.

We ran away from a guy in an Opel GT in my Super Beetle during the 2003 Alpine 500 on some windy roads in the delta.

Did Karmann make them?

I know it takes A LOT of work to put a big block chevy, and a narrowed 9 inch in one. I also know it's scary as hell when you do!

I almost bought one in pieces for $1500 a few years ago...everything existed, and a torn down engine ready for a rebuild...


That would have been one of the bigger mistakes in my life. Not that it's a bad car, but that I would have invested in a pile of steel that would then become a pile of old steel...I never would have gotten around to rebuilding it.

I saw one once with Ferrari emblems on it!

I had an Opel GT in college. It was a great car and actually handled really well. Mine was only about 10 years old when I bought it and it already had quite a bit of rust. Not long after I bought it, I was driving home from work and it started raining. Soon after the rain started, I noticed that the carpet down by my feet was wet. Since my feet were dry something was up. I reached down and pulled up the carpet and saw road rushing past! Big holes in the floor boards. :eek:

The car was actually alot of fun. I put a Weber carburetor on it (the Solexes were crap) and removed the primary muffler and only ran the rear dual-out resonator. It sounded great. The headlight mechanisms were a PITA and the wiring on the car left alot to be desired, but it was pretty cool. Parts were cheap and it was easy to work on.

I'd love to have another one.

Yep. My brother had one in college, and eventually migrated to grown up Corvettes.
