Rick, I gotta agree with the guys who think you're really pushing it if you try something like that.

Just because it's "Not against the law" doesn't mean you're not gonna have a HARD time accomplishing ANYTHING AT ALL with that idea. You'll probably have your own personal cop about 30 seconds from the time you start something until the second you leave, and all the way back to your home. So make sure your shoelaces are tied, and you don't have a crack in your windshield and your registration is up to date and you don't have a taillight out and etc. etc. etc.

As far as "gun buybacks" go, don't you think that the cops may reserve some of the "questionable" buybacks for ballistics checks before they get rid of those guns? I don't know. Just asking, I guess.

Upon further reading, the gun buy-back is to take place in four locations from 10:00-2:00 on Sat. One is at a Phoenix PD station and the other three are at churches, but I can't find the names or locations of the churches. Seems these places aren't exactly the same as public sidewalks. I don't really want any long guns, but probably won't see anyone carrying a handgun openly for me to know to approach them. Unless this event just has a huge turnout, I don't know that I'll be able to spot lines of people waiting in the scorching heat to hand in their guns. Still, I think I'll try to map this out and swing by on my motorcycle so I can jump off quickly in case I spot someone who looks like they want to sell.

Why don't you just take out an ad in the local paper and put up some fliers saying that your gun club will give free appraisals to anyone thinking of participating in the gun buy back program. If they're motivated enought to take their guns in, they'll be motivated enough to call you.

Most gun buy back programs offer anonymity, meaning turned-in guns don't even get checked for balistics or being stolen.

The police/DA can offer immunity for turning in stolen property, but what about private buyers? I don't think it's a good idea to buy guns from crack-heads for fear they might have been stolen or used in a crime. You ultimately could end up with a "hot potato".

Thanks Danny. I'll punch those into the old GPS.

I live pretty far from this event and I highly doubt the folks who are handing in guns will take the trouble to call. Besides, I still only have VA and DC area codes on my cell phones. If a $100 gift card motivates them to get rid of a gun, I doubt they'll take the time to call me and then wait until I can get down to see them and, if the gun is junk, then walk on down to the buy-back.

I didn't say it was a good idea. I'm just saying those are the ground rules for gun buy backs. Even simple ideas get complicated when put in practice, don't they?

People who believe police promises of immunity are the same ones who are stupid enough to hand in guns. Oh wait.

I know, if I were a murderer and knew the cops were either looking for me or my murder weapon, these gun buy-backs would be the perfect opportunity to unload incriminating evidence and make it permanently inadmissable in court. Given that possibility, I highly doubt there is any real immunity.

BTW, I was shooting at the NRA range one day when I saw an instructor come out of the classroom and overheard him say to someone that there was a guy in the class with a gun that had a scratched off serial #. They kicked that guy out right there and told him to never come back.

Anyway, I'm looking for just a handful of guns that would be pretty unlikely to be crime guns - WWII-era Lugers, decent 1911's. I'm not at all interested in TEC-9's, Lorcins or Raven Arms crackhead junk guns, no matter how cheap they are.

Since these will be held at church's, there's no law against wearing an outfit like this:

Walk up to the donor's and tell them you'd like to bless their guns. Then slip them a C-note and slip away.

I recall a recent case like that. Turns out the guy turning in the murder weapon wasn't the murderer...says he "found" the gun. Still, I think a good defense attorney would have a field day with the "entrapment" angle.
