We have Direct TV. If you like to talking to guys in India named "Skip", service people who don't show up/show up late/show up stupid, watching the directory load up twice daily, and 900 useless channels out of 950 - you'll love it! God, I miss Comcast.

I know this thread is about dish and dtv, but FYI I recently switched to Uverse.

I get better resolution than Adelphia cable.
I get free Showtime and 2 other (no HBO).
Uverse now handles my internet, land line, and phone.
$20.00/mo cheaper than before.

I don't get any of that stuff

I get what you expect to get with rabbit ears...ABC, CBS, FOX, 2 or 3 PBS stations, some local stations, a music video station, some good Spanish stations for soccer, lots of religious stations, a few 24/7 news/weather stations...about 30 all said and done.

If I can't find something to watch on 30 channels, then I should be doing something else instead. Strangely, I've survived just fine without cable for close to 10 years now.

I had DirectTV for 7 years while in Brooklyn, and only lost signal once a year or so. Had one glitch with them that was frustrating but ultimately fixed.

I don't know if I'd prefer it to Dish (never having had Dish) but it didn't suck and I wasn't shoveling money to the cable company.

Att Uverse for about 2 months and I'm thrilled. Former time-warner cable for 10 yrs and finally had enuff. Uverse is the bomb.

Ok, I got DirecTV and was very happy with it until last night. I went to watch Entourage and Curb Your Enthusiasm and I seem to have every HBO channel EXCEPT the comedy one. I called DirecTV today and the guy said they don't offer it. I asked if I was the first person who'd ever switched over to DirecTV and then called when I couldn't find my two favorite shows that also happen to be the most popular ones on HBO. He said I was. What now?

But I'm pretty sure I could get everything I need for less than I'm paying Cox. Who has what service and how do you like it for the money?

I have dish network, it's not bad, but i plan on switching to directv soon. My remote broke, and they want to charge me for a replacement. So screw them, i'll just sign with DirecTV and get a new remote for free.

Call DTV again. It appears that the agent does not knowthe channels: Entourage can be found here:Entourage 70 HBOH 7:00 PM PDT 07/04/2008

02 Entourage 501 HBOHD 7:00 PM PDT 07/04/2008

03 Entourage 501 HBO 7:00 PM PDT 07/04/2008

04 Entourage 501 HBOHD 7:30 PM PDT 07/04/2008

as for Curb your enthusiasm - it may not be on right now because I did a search at www.directv.com and could not find it but I know it is there.

Another satisfied AT&T U-Verse subscriber here. I also added the Elite (6.0Mb) High Speed Internet Access. I get about 5.6Mb down and just shy of 1Mb up. Also get free Wi-Fi access anywhere AT&T has a hot spot (Starbucks, major airports etc.).

If you've been on for a while you can get a whole new receiver for free. I've had both. I have dish & wouldn't switch.

I got Directv in 1995 or 1996... back when they first started. I just switched over to Dish.
I like Dish better ! Dish seems to be a bit ahead of the curve with their technology. The DVR is
great! PPV on demand as well as regular PPV. Fantastic picture quality and sound. Yes I do
get the outage with really bad storms, it is something that I really do not have a problem with. I feel it is still so much better than cable ever was. I would never go back to cable.

grudk 07-01-2008 09:55 AM

Too many problems with cable, so I dumped and went to Dish. Then I came to accept that TV is a vast wasteland of fluff and disinformation, and I dumped dish about two months ago. We just do Netflix now, and life is better -- I don't waste time in front of mindless programming that I really didn't want to watch anyway. Wife still gets the shows she wants with rabbit ears (all on Network TV).

They don't seem to agree.

Update. I'm so irate now that I want to do things I can't post about online. After almost two weeks, no DSL install. Last week I called the reseller, from whom I ordered everything. He said he'd look into it. No call back. I called him again yesterday, said he'd look into it, no call back. Today I called DirecTV. After explaining the issue to each of the five different people they transferred me to, someone said I needed to call back and ask for a supervisor. I did that. When they asked how I was doing today, I said I was irate and they were about to lose my account. They said it'd be one minute to get to a supervisor. After 20 min. of elevator music, I hung up, called the reseller again. This time he looked into it. He called back and said Qwest DSL's website was wrong in telling him DSL was available in my area and actually, only their satellite Internet service is available, which, of course, costs more than I'm paying Cox. Couple this with the fact that DirecTV doesn't have the one HBO channel I care about and this has been a disaster. Turns out Cox was the better choice. I don't know if I can cancel everything now with no fee, but I'm pretty sure I will have to pay that first bill of $63, which covers through the end of this month.

If I keep the DirecTV and then just cancel Cox's cable tv service, the Cox Internet service will probably be more expensive, since it would no longer be bundled. Of course, when I just called to ask about that, I got "all circuits are busy. please try your call again later." I want to do very bad things to some people now.

If your contract is up they will send a fresh box. Ask for a manager & his boss in needed.

I'm on Direct TV because it has more HD channels than any other service and I'm a NFL Sunday ticket subscriber since the first season.

Yep, Directv has the most HD channels in its lineup.

Yeah and we pay for them. Not one HD package, but two at a cost of $15/mo. These channels don't include HBO or Showtime, just ESPN, CNN, Discover, and other normal programming. If HD/digital is mandated by the FCC, why must we pay extra for it? They should just lump the added costs into the basic service and let it be rather than make HD "extra". After all, HD is supposed to be the norm at some point.

HD is not mandated, but digital broadcast is. The regular satellite box is your converter so no upgrade to HD is necessary.

We had Direct TV for about 10 years, just switched to Dish because Direct would not give us new receivers with a new contract.

They call begging us to come back now.

As far as picture it is about the same.
