On the short list, who's hiring?

Thought I got into a stable industry in design of medical equipment, but found out this week I was wrong, at least for my employer. My boss pulled me in his office and tells me it would be in my best interests to find something else, I'm first on the list due to my salary. I'll be lucky to make it through July.....

So I'm opening up the job search again and trying to figure out where not to go. I love the southeast, but have to open up the geographical search if I want to keep food on the table.

Will do project management for food.......:(

KFC911 06-28-2008 05:00 AM

Sorry 'bout that John! Unfortunately, that's one of the downsides to "achieving" (salary wise) is that you're likely to be first "in their sights" when the beancounters and bs'ers call the shots, no matter what your performance level is. Good luck...

azasadny 06-28-2008 05:06 AM

John,
Check out Bayer and BASF in Cary...

DUK 06-28-2008 05:09 AM

Hate to hear this John. Hopefully something opens up soon.

Joeaksa 06-28-2008 05:54 AM

John,

Sorry to hear that and been in your shoes far too often in the old days.

Start networking NOW. Get your info out on PLAXO, XING and the other business networking sites.

Send emails out to your friends and collegues and put the word out that you are looking.

Joe

azasadny 06-28-2008 06:14 AM

John,
Put your resume/profile out there on LinkedIn and join my group. I got 4 phone interviews and 2 in-personal interviews thanks to LinkedIn and nothing from Monster, CareerBuilder and HotJobs. LinkedIn is free and I'm not affiliated with them, just a satisfied customer...

jhelgesen 07-01-2008 01:37 PM

Getting the info out there, talked to a lot of recruiters who like my experience.

Thanks for the support guys, keep the suggestions coming!

Maybe we need to get Wayne to start a networking page, or is that what OT is for? :D

Porsche-O-Phile 07-01-2008 01:53 PM

Can you go independent?

azasadny 07-01-2008 02:46 PM

kach22i gave my resume to his wife, Kim and she gave it to her friend (IT recruiter) and her company hired me. A fellow Pelican helped me find the best IT job I've ever had, pretty cool, huh?!

David 07-01-2008 03:56 PM

We're hiring turbine mechanics. How are your sledge hammer skills?

If the wife can keep insurance, then I've been thinking about consulting. If I could use my 18+ years of experience in design to feed the family I might be a happy guy. I'll work contracts here if I have to....

It's tough when I see the majority of jobs out there listed as IT jobs though, don't know a thing about it.

island911 07-01-2008 04:16 PM

The Seattle area is still strong for medical device design.

tabs 07-01-2008 04:48 PM

OBAMA is looking for a VP...

Porsche-O-Phile 07-01-2008 04:49 PM

I imagine that with an aging population, that's not a particular area that's going away soon. Even if the economy-at-large is having problems.

I strongly believe that in adversity lies opportunity. Maybe check into doing independent consulting. I can't wait for the day I go on my own. . . I realize it ain't for everyone, but the appeal of making my own schedule and answering only to myself has GREAT appeal. . .

Best of luck to you. I'm sure you'll end up better off as a result of this.

What Jeff said! I've been through too many banking "mergers", corporate downsizings (seen half a work force "let go" at once), corporate "take overs", and "outsourcings" than I care to think about, and INVARIABLY, folks seem to end up "better off" when all is said and done. It sucks to go through it (I haven't yet, but will soon), but YOU'RE going to be OK...I just know it :)! I "could" have gone with our outsourcer that's taking over on Aug. 15 (at the same salary, benes, etc.), but I'm "burned out" where I am, and don't want to work for a HUGE corporation anymore (200,000+), so I'll be "turning the page" pretty soon myself. Good luck John!

We are hiring. Most of Houston is hiring.

legion 07-01-2008 07:57 PM

We are hiring Java developers en masse.

We could probably also use an Aion developer.

rusnak 07-01-2008 08:13 PM

what kind of medical equipment? Sullivan Schein is expanding like crazy in dental.

IROC 07-02-2008 04:48 AM

I think Siemens here in Knoxville is hiring some folks. They do CAT scan type equipment here, I believe. Quite a few job opening here where I work also (Oak Ridge National Laboratory).

Houston is an absolute freak show right now. I've increased my salary by $50k in the last three years (switched companies twice after 24 years with Bechtel).

If you're a project manager/engineer, or basically if you can fog a mirror, you can work in Houston.

They are literally pulling guys off the street and throwing them into cubicles - right next to Dilbert and Wally! We've got retirees working part time just to fill in the gaps.

Can't go with these guys, signed a 1 year non-compete when I joined in here.

I see the linkedin group is getting bigger. Looks like we are about 90%IT folks....

Still looking hard, don't have a final date yet but might by next week. Lining up some interviews now.....

KFC911 07-16-2008 06:52 AM

Good luck John! Where's the link to the linkedin group? My corporate gig will be up (outsourcing) in 22 more working days (but who's counting :)), so I might be interested in linking in. I'm going to take some time off to "regroup" first however...I'm actually looking forward to it, but who knows what'll happen next...Thanks!

lendaddy 07-16-2008 07:06 AM

I would also be interested in the linkedin group if you'll have me, my future is anything but certain and I'll add some diversity as I have nothing to to do with I.T. :D

JeremyD 07-16-2008 08:10 AM

All of Texas is hiring right now - The industries that are hiring are related to oil and gas production, alternative energy, anything that can pass itself off as "green" real estate owned sections of banks, service organizations that cater to divesting real estate (quite a few of these cottage industries are springing up around the country). Insurance is up right now too. Third party administrators. Aging population - so all the support fields that surround those.

Porsche-O-Phile 07-16-2008 08:27 AM

If you can get us any referrals for design/construction projects (particularly in healthcare) I'll split my bonus with you for bringing the work in. . . ;)

I'd love to see our office get more heavily into healthcare. . . When I go on my own in a couple years this is an area I intend to hit hard. Anything I can do to get my foot in the door now (even though I'm working for someone else right now) will help. And it would put some $$$ in your pocket.

Mr_Wizard 07-16-2008 09:03 AM

There isn't enough gold in Ft. Knox....however, thank you much for the VERY KIND offer :)

M.D. Holloway 07-16-2008 12:58 PM

We are hiring Sales Reps if your interested.

EdT82SC 07-16-2008 01:12 PM

We should start a job postings thread. Lots of us work places that are hiring. My place of work is trying to hire 8 programmers. We need a few with Java experience, and several with C/C++ experience on Windoze and various flavors of Unix.

Screw them. If they canned you, IMO the non-compete is right out the door.

Would Patterson be considered a competitor?

Go to linkedin.com and do a search for "Arthur Zasadny" (me) and request to join my group after creating a profile for yourself. My group is growing pretty quickly and there are many, many good leads there!!

Does linkedin spam me or do people collect e-mails there to spam? Should I use a throw away e-mail account?

Depends on the state - and some are specific to "non-compete" (can't compete with your old company) to "non-solicit" can't solicit existing clients/employees.

Arduous non-competes rarely hold up - but specific non solicit and confined term and geographic non-competes usually do.

azasadny 07-16-2008 05:15 PM

no spam

Lendaddy, I've been on LinkedIn for over a year and I've never been spammed, it's a good place to get/keep in touch with other professionals. I had 4 interviews generated from my LinkedIn profile last year, it worked better than Monster, Careerbuilder, etc... for me.

We have target for up to 100 new civil engineers(at the entry Jr Engineer grade level). These are mostly newbies out of engineering school without a PE license. By the way, they don't seem to exist in the US. Can't seem to find em' anywhere.

John, have hope, it doesn't work that way!

1. It is exceedingly rare that any no-compete has ever EVER held up in court. Judges will in evitably rule for the person to make their living. The only time they ever rule in favor of the company is when the person takes confiential lists (clients, business) along with them.

2. If they release you from employment, they are releasing you from your contract. No one can hire you, tell you to sign a no-compete, then fire you expecting you not to work for a competitor. Hell have the sales guys I know make their livings that way.

Trust me on these, (but validate of course!) I work in an industry where sales guys come and go like this all the time.

crustychief 07-17-2008 08:06 AM

Interesting thread. I am retiring from the Navy in two months, I think I will check out Texas.

jhelgesen 07-17-2008 11:13 AM

Okay, been reading my pre-hire forms more. Clause I read was a "non-piracy" clause, can't try to hire anyone or try to suggest someone leave here for a year after......doesn't say "we can stop you for working someone else"

Still working on staying local. Had a few calls for positions in WI, but that may be a bit north for us.
