New auto painting rules in CA in 2009?
I thought of posting this in the painting forum, but that's more for DIY advice. Anyway, I heard that in January '09, California will allow only water-based auto paints, which are harder to work with, and are less durable than the current paints. Is this true? I need to know, since I plan on having my Tristar painted sooner or later. Maybe it should be sooner.

Time to go to AZ to have my 911 redone then.
Or I'll just stock up on the paint now. |
No it's not true. The conversion date is July31st 2008. As for the quality of the paint?????? I don't know. I'll stop painting at the end of this year no matter what they make us spray.

After years of crop dusting and breathing those wonderful chemicals, then doing dope and fabric airplanes and spraying those chemicals in the hangar without a respirator, the insides of my lungs are prolly shot anyway! Joe |
all new cars have been water based for a while - my 1999 MB ML450 was water based as was my 2000 Boxster S
the paints are (now) pretty durable; dunno re difficulty of working with them they have a nice quality in that they will produce the most amazing flatness I've ever seen - not even a hint of orange peel or ripple I swear i used to just sit there and stare at the silver on the Boxster sometimes from up close. It was truly mesmerizing. of course, that was done at the factory. |
