Criminal back ground checks at time of gun purchases is just plain common ******* sense. No criminal background check= a convicted double murderer can just walk into a gun store and buy a trunkful of guns.

Seriously, the stupid among the righties, my erstwhile allies, is HIGH in this thread.

What kind of genius could possibly oppose an instant criminal background check? It DOES work, applicants ARE TURNED DOWN, arrests ARE MADE as a result.

And because of the instant background check, WHICH THE NRA PUSHED FOR, arrests can actually be made on the scene, in real time. IT DOES HAPPEN.

Seriously people, HULL-O.

M21,

You’re out to lunch on NICS having any positive effect except BS feel good.

Last I checked, and it was years ago, the denied number was in the six figures but arrests only in triple digits and convictions only in double digits. Those are extremely poor percentages by any standards that I am aware of. Someone else can check more current percentages. I nor anyone else I know of can see any common sense in those ratios.

If you’ve had certain background investigations you will be denied every time MICS is checked, this includes security background investigations. Since NICS was initiated I have had every check denied, the reason is the background checks. I know many others that have the history.

I'll make the wild guess that those triple digit arrests were mostly in VA. VA was and is particularly hardcore on this stuff with a five year mandatory minimum on gun crimes and no parole for anything. I don't know if they're still doing it, but in the old days in VA, if you were denied via a NICS check, they store didn't just tell you no, they locked the doors and waited for the state police to come and get you for even attempting to purchase. They probably relaxed this due to the number of false denials. Sure, once in a while, a real idiot with felony convicitons and/or outstanding warrants would try to buy a gun in a store and fill out the NICS paperwork. But those were probably a very tiny percentage.

I know that if I were NICS-ineligible, I'd have no problem getting guns through other means and I'm a complete non-criminal. The real criminal minds out there don't bother with the silly gun laws the rest of us law-abiding folks have to deal with.

Rick,

I was stationed in NC when some of us decided to check on both why we kept getting denied (holding current TS clearances of various kinds).

We just found out the numbers from the nation as a whole plus reasons for being denied.

Background checks and the purchase forms can work, at least sometimes, and they do save lives.

This guy was reported by several of his classmates as being all kinds of suspicious, and was locked up for trying to illegally buy AK-47s:

"He bought two AK-47 from Van Wagenen guns in Orem last October. Orem police discovered the alien registration number Yohannes gave the gun shop is false. He was arrested and a search of his room turned up an imported Russian rifle and a large amount of ammunition."

"His roommates say Yohannes was quiet and watched a lot of violent videos on the internet. They say they heard him talk about planning to be involved in a mass shooting."

That's one potential columbine stopped. It took me exactly 2 minutes to find this article(mainly because i was browsing various guns stats in an article before it)

-----------

This guy was an ex cop and straw purchaser arms-dealer who got 10 years. The charge they nabbed him for was Falsifying paperwork.

All those little yes/no boxes put his ass away for a decade.

Are you getting denied or delayed on your NICS check? If denied did you contact them and ask for the reason?
I have a number of ex-military guys that routinely get delayed but always approved within three days. Some mentioned they had security clearance and thought that might be the reason.

M21,

The sometimes works is actually very rarely works. A few hundred NICS out of millions is not a success, it is pure luck and a huge waste of resources. That means failure.

In the first article all charges have been dropped and it appears that the rifles may have been returned to Yohannes. NICS did not work as Yohannes was able to purchase two rifles.

The second article is a hack job pure and simple. NICS in no way shape or form was any use in that case from anything in the article.

Neither is anything a feel good smoke screen that impinges on people’s freedom at great cost with no benefit.

On2Wheels,

We were getting denied. It takes some work to get through the NICS bureaucracy to the FBI liaison. Then get the FBI to research why denied (background investigations that are in-depth) then clear up the individual purchase. This is always a multi-day ordeal that simply means I and others have missed opportunities to purchase firearms.

For a while on a personal note I was (and still do to a certain extent) have identity/IRS/debt collection problem. Basically someone with the same first, last name and middle initial owes the IRS over 12 million dollars. The IRS kept putting me on their hit list and didn’t believe that I am not 58 years old with a wife and had swindled people in Ft. Meyers Fl. out of millions. I had to get Sen. Hutchinson involved who verified that I could not have been the person in question. Supposedly all Federal, State, and local files were expunged of the mis-id but it keeps popping up.

Very disappointed. Based on your posts, I always pictured you as a wise, distinguished & silver-haired retiree..., not some young punk?!? :)

Oh well...if you can provide detailed pics of that reporter's rack and/or ass, I would be eternally grateful.

Sidenote: Are there any laws barring a private group of citizens from doing their own "buy-back"? That could be a way around your current situation having to run around behind the cops backs...?

I always thought Rick was an Asian guy...

Well...seeing that pic, I would assume he's more closely related to Robert E. Lee rather than Huang Le...

KFC911 07-01-2008 09:28 AM

Then he would be Wick Lee :)

That guy SCREAMS Mall Ninja.

He's tactical man. So tactical it hurts. :-/

The cops who ran me off were wearing jeans, black Phoenix PD t-shirts, Glocks, cuffs and radios. No earpieces or jackboots. They really weren't that bad. And they were definitely in good shape.
