Really Fine pellet guns
 

I purchased this pellet gun and didn't pay much attention to the cover of the owners manual. Turns out that the target on the cover is the actual test target for that gun. There is a hole on the cover and the target is pasted into the manual. Thats right, on page 2 or so, mixed in with all the other languages is the explanation. THere are 5, count them FIVE holes in the center of the target. Pretty darn good for a pellet gun eh!

Pellet gun? I've never shot a pellet. Are they good eatin'?

Careful reloading the air in that thing.

Air contains oxygen, highly flammable.

To be safe you should fill the house with CO2 which can prevent a nasty explosion.

Years ago when I was stationed in Berlin we went over to the East section and I bought a nice pellet gun. They all came at that time like yours with a sample target showing how accurate it was.

Germans are like that! How much did you pay for it?

Thats what it really looks like. Cost is a little under $3,000, US. It uses compressed air. Scuba tank is about $300 more, plus adapters, about $110. Add a pellet stop $100 and some good pellets $10 and you are ready to go. It gets almost 200 rounds per charge of air. I measured the velocity and its 600 feet per second with a std dev of 5, from start to finish. Other pellets vary the velocity, but are consistent withing their weight group. That little tank on the gun is charged with 200 bar, ie 3,000psi.

Everything is adjustable.

Wow, that looks wild. Is it relatively quiet? I have a conventional single-shot Beeman that is really effin loud - too loud to plink here in the suburbs.

It sounds exactly like a paint ball gun. Quite a bit quieter than a typical break barrel gun. You can likely get away with it as long as the neighbor isn't a prick. You can also dry fire it without hurting it.

I use a Beeman Tempest .177cal, 500 fpc, about $125, one pump wonder for cheap.

dam accurate at 100' if you're good

it'll usually bring down a sea gul if you hit him in the croulla at said distance

I got one of those in the garage, it is damm accurate, gonna teach my boys to shoot with that and my old crossman air rifle.

man you guys....other than my real guns, all I have is my Daisy bb gun that I got when I was 12. It's like the one Ralphie got in A Christmas Story.

I used to shoot the bbs up in the air at an arc...my parents had a really big yard...and try to get them to land inside a mayonnaise jar.

what kind of distance do you get on the Beeman? The Feinwerk? The Diana will probably get me shot by a passing cop, haha.

Nice gun. I was in Wisconsin a few weeks ago on biz and had some time to kill, so I went to Farm n' Fleet and picked this up for under 30 bucks--great pistol for the price--over 450 fps with a full cartridge...my 9 yr old and wife love to shoot it now.

That is one of the best guns for the 10 meter Olympic Rifle. The people shooting those guns are so good that they change the target at every shot to be able to score them properly, the score is done electronically for accuracy. The final result at the 2004 Olympics is 599 (on 60 rounds) for first place and 598 for 2nd place.

Really an art form.

Good luck. As far as I can tell, the Webly and Scott (marketed by Beeman in the U.S.) Tempest and Hurricane are either out of production or no longer being imported.

The U.K. just tightented air gun laws (again). No more mail order sales; all sales have to be in person, eye to eye. I'm not sure if that has anything to do with the sudden dissapearance of the Tempest and Hurricane from the U.S. market. I've been looking high and low for one for myself, to no avail. If you find some one with them in stock, let me know.

One of the best deals going in air rifles is still the old Sheridan line of 5mm (.20 caliber) pneumatic rifles. Mac1 Air Guns in L.A. will either upgrade your own, or sell you a brand new Sheridan with their proprietary valves and pump mechanism. A brand new one will only set you back about $250. They completely rebuilt and upgraded my 1962 vintage Blue Streak for only about $150.

A standard Sheridan will shoot its 5mm, 14.3 grain pellet at about 670 fps. Mac1's "Steroid" conversion approaches 900 fps with that pellet. Any Sheridan will shoot cloverleafs at the standard air rifle match range of 10 meters. Not the one hole groups of the $3000 match rifles, but certainly all shots overlapping. Where they really come into their own is at extended ranges, outdoors, in the real world. The 14.3 grain .20 caliber pellet is heavier than most .22 caliber pellets and has the highest ballistic coefficient of any air rifle pellet. This translates into far less wind drift when shot outdoors at longer range. Those expensive .177 caliber match guns simply fall apart in the wind at extended ranges. There is a reason air rifle matches are fired at 10 meters, indoors.

I've had a lot of fun over the years, whipping out my Sheridan and mopping up on the guys with the $3000 match rifles, in friendly matches. I just take them outside, and put the targets up at, say, 50 yards. At that range, they're done. Those little .177's blow around like badmitton birdies. At that range, the Sheridan still groups well under an inch. And will shoot clear through a rat, or even still kill a possum. There is not a .177 on earth that will do that. Plus, the Sheridan is light and handy, and can actually be carried afield like a real rifle. Here is my '62 vintage, along with a mid '80's vintage Sheridan pistol (sadly, no longer made):

i dont know what rifle it was, but my roommate was on the USF shooting team. he owned a fantastic rifle! we would "pick" lemons from our tree with it. peep sight only. we would sever the tiny branch the held the lemon, and it would drop to the ground. simply awesome. the seal went bad on it, and he shelved it, only to pawn it away a few years later. i was bummed.
