California is on Fire

Bit smokey in the Capitol today, Northern California is on Fire, turns out if there is no rain for 4 months, then you get a few lightning strikes, you have big problems.

Lots of smoke rolling in from Chino hills today on the I-15. It was wicked hot in the interior valley today. How does 11U baseball, 4 games within 24 hrs, all in 106F heat sound. I made it slightly easier with a 24 pack of Tecate beer...

Cali is a big place and trust me is NOT "on fire". Freaking hot yes, ash...no.

Been having the hired help clearing grass this week. A friend of my son's who needs the money, apparently my 19 y/o son doesn't want/need the money. I'm going to Boston tomorrow for the week, so a brush fire in my neighborhood is a good possibility.

I was riding 2-up most of the weekend. According to the temp guage on the bike, yesterday it peaked at 107 in Topanga. Today peaked at 103. Been drinking insane amounts of water. Yesterday evening played a block party gig in Venice. Went on at 6:30pm and it was still in the upper 80's - right next to the water. The good thing is that most party attendees were scantily clad...

It was a USSSA tournament at the Big League Dreams park in Riverside. Hundreds of boys out there and yes it was 106 F - with very little shade.

Tobra, are those fires near Sacramento, or are you just getting the smoke drifting across your area? That wildfire shiit sure sounds scary.

my home smells like a bbq. and i am in the bay area.

it is ironic how a wildfire is a necessary, natural occurance. we keep them from happening, weed grows, fires get big. i hope everyone comes out unscathed.

Hey, its summer in the West. Normal situation. just hope that its not as bad as the last few years due to the excessive rain that we had the past 6 months.

Actually Joe it isn't quite normal. June is usually a fairly cool month in socal...not so this month.

Aug/Sept/Oct are the real burn months.

Why do people build in dangerous areas like this?

NorCal is definitely on fire. My house smells like smoked bacon. Not that this is bad, but unfortunate for those losing homes and property.

because they are not that smart, and they get a nice view

Got a lot of rain early, then nothing for 4 months, so tinder dry, and plenty of it
http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/06/30/calif.wildfires.ap/index.html

Due to the topography of this valley, air(or smoke filled air) can get trapped, or tend to collect here, contributes to the tule fog also.

On the plus side, if everything is not on fire, you get a cooling delta breeze every night, which means if you have a whole house fan, your A/C may not come on for weeks at a time.

In this instance, my trip to Monterrey and Big Sur got canceled C'est la vie, had half dozen people in the two hospitals anyway

Not very thinly veiled but I'll take the bait:

For the same reason people build a city on the coast below sea level. The difference is these people pay for insurance and don't want to live in a government trailer for the rest of their lives or have the government feed and clothe them. Even if their house burns down they have money to rebuild it, and don't wait for the rest of the world to do it for them.

The fires are in California, not Louisiana. They build in stupid places and buy insurance. We are not talking about gubmint housing

Arnold was trying to terminate fireworks sales, good idea, not well recieved

Wait until your insurance triples and quadruples. My insurance in Florida went from $1400 a year for a 1400s.f. 200K home to $6500 a year.

Now I am weighing the option of not insuring it anymore and self insuring.

Do you really think all of N.O. is govt housing? Do you really think all of N.O. is uninsured? I thought ya'll had GOOD education there in the land of wildfires, earthquakes & mudslides?
