desprate help needed
My sisters kids decided to play with my laptop while i was at work today..... now my space bar, V, A,Q,G and windows button are either broken off or doesn't depress... before anyone lets in i didn't have a chance to hide it because he came over univited, and messed with the front doors lock....
any advise on how to get these little guys back on w/out breaking the little white clips.... It's a inspiron E1505 |
The white clips operate like scissors right? Most keyboards have metal clips on that the white clips attach to. Use a little patience and get an idea of how they work. It should not be hard to get the keys on - unless things are really broken.

Looks like you might be in line for a replacement keyboard. Dunno about the inspiron, but they're easy to replace on a thinkpad. Do a search and you can probably find the tech instructions.
|
The keyboard buttons should just snap back into place, assuming the board/plungers weren't damaged. Although, it might be easier just to pop a new keyboard in.
Looks like you can get one delivered for under $20: |
Where do you live? I have a couple of extra Dell laptop keyboards. Used but still work.
I am at 101 and Cave Creek road, few miles North... We can snap a new one in usually in 10 minutes or so. Joe |
Joe, nice offer. Do the keyboards you have, have the same ribbon connector in the same place? I know that Toshiba had a few different ones. Just make sure that yours actually look the same as Levi's. Don't want to see you two trying to force a keyboard that looks similar... Or maybe I do... I could use a laugh or two.

Dave,
I have two of the Dell laptop keyboards not being used around here. Just replaced one on a lady friends Dell 1705, and believe that its the same style of ribbon cable as on the 15XX series that he has. This one terminates in a flat ribbon that pushes into a mounting block on the MB. I also have an extra used but good condition Dell 600m that works on most of the older style laptops with a ribbon that terminates in a connector block fitting. Joe |
I'm sure they will work. Just giving you a heads up. You don't know how many times we had similar keyboards for Toshiba's, connected the ribbon, seated the keyboard, only to have the ribbon pull out underneath because it was a 1/4" off.
It was usually rather amusing, but frustrating when you just wanted to get the laptop finished and out the door. |
Dave,
Know the feeling and hope one of these will work. If not we can K-ball parts off of another one I have to get him some keys back... Joe |

i'm at central and dunlap.. i'm down to the city bus now but can probably make it over their tomorrow after work... |
Levi,
Thats why I changed out the keyboard on the other 1705 so best to lets us get you a keyboard that works then can order one off of Ebay or the like. I just paid something like $25 or so with shipping for one and it takes about 10 minutes max to change out. Will let you use a used keyboard until a new one comes in then after I show you how to change them you can do the switch out. Email or PM me tomorrow with your contact info and we can get together. Just met with Levi and he is back up and running.
Met him at a nearby Micky D's and pulled his laptop apart there. Took less than 5 minutes from start to finish. Easy to change on the newer Dells. He was lucky as I had a couple of extra used keyboards that fit his unit. It was the flat ribbon with no connector on the end version. Also gave him a couple of keyboards that were as well missing keys so that if this happens again possibly he can "mix and match" and get back on line. Did the work on the tables at the McDonnalds and charged him the excessive amount of a Big Mac for the parts and labor. Hope I was not overcharging! :) Good to meet another local Pelican! Joe A |
That was really kind of you, Joe.

Gogar, Would have loved to but it was during rush hour traffic time and I absolutely hate to get out in this traffic, so this worked best for both of us. He rode the bus up to meet me and when finished he was 100 feet from the bus stop that takes him back home. Dave, I love Cali Pizza Kitchen! Course my waistline shows it! This worked better for both of us. |
