Volvo S40 1.9 terminal oil leak?
This is my Grandmother-in-laws S40 it has 64,000 miles on it. I was changing out the snow tires (in July mind you) and I noticed that it was leaking oil on my garage floor. I tracked it down to something in the timing compartment, and not knowing Volvos very well I had her take it to the dealer.
Anyway, I just got word from a very distressed grandmother-in-law that the dealer recommends she get rid of the car rather than repair it. It has a severe leak from one of the cam shaft seals, and a minor leak from the other. This repair entails removing the engine, and they want around $6000 to repair everything, as they say there are other leaks in the same area. My question is are these cars that bad? I know Ford owns them these days, and we we all know their quality issues, however I thought these cars were better than this. Anyone have this particular issue on an S40? And if so what was the actual repair?

Get it away from the dealer and find a good private shop.
You also might try to find an internet forum like Pelican for Volvos. Just did a google search and came up with several.

Do as Joe says, the dealers are killing to sell cars these days as you probably already know, and at 64K to have those kind of problems, it's most likely a defect from manufacturing. That is really BS from the dealer!

Go to one of the Volvo forums and do some research. If this is correct then Volvo will have a class action lawsuit against them.
