We stayed in Kihei and found the best snorkling was around the lava flows outside our condo... way better than Molokini. Turtle town are was very cool, too.

For kids there are two excellent places, one's called baby beach and the water is shallow with no surf as there is a reef about 200 yards out. It's hard to find, it's just before you get to Lahaina; turn right just after the Jesus sign.

The second is probably the best snorkling beach on Maui, I forget the name, but it's protected by a reef as well. It's near napili-kapalua area I think it's called kapalua bay. There's a snorkle bob's (no relation) close to there and they can direct you, but it's off Lower Honoapiliilani road.
