Question VW Motor rebuild.....

i have a stock VW motor that seems to run well but leaks some. i'm interested in rebuilding it and beefing it up a bit.... i currently have it strapped in a sand rail that will shortly be street legal. my question is, can someone recommend a book on rebuilding this type of motor, that is explained in VERY BASIC idiot terms how it's to be accomplished? i'm a fairly quick learner, but have no motor rebuilding experience. Is this something i could do by myself? or should I resort to a shop that could do? and what might this cost?

All help is welcome......

thanks in advance

Hmmm....

What kind of engine is this ? Type I or Type IV.Easy way to spot the difference.Exhaust ports on front/rear of the cylinderheads (type I) or on the bottom (type IV).

Easy to do, they are very uncomplicated engines. Give it a try after reading some good books about what it takes.

Interesting first post on a Porsche forum. Above mentioned books should do.

I can't work on my 356 without the Muir book (idiots guide... how appropriate)

you could also go nuts and get a 356 motor and use the Maestro's books on a rebuild...
