How 'bout the "most spectacular victories of the war on terror" ... ignored by MSM

Did you know that the US and Iraq will shortly conclude “one of the most spectacular victories of the war on terror”? You wouldn’t if you read American newspapers or watched American television. The Times of London reports on the approaching end of al-Qaeda in Iraq as the forces of Nouri al-Maliki and the US close the trap on 1,200 AQ terrorists in Mosul:

After being forced from its strongholds in the west and centre of Iraq in the past two years, Al-Qaeda’s dwindling band of fighters has made a defiant “last stand” in the northern city of Mosul.

A huge operation to crush the 1,200 fighters who remained from a terrorist force once estimated at more than 12,000 began on May 10.

Operation Lion’s Roar, in which the Iraqi army combined forces with the Americans’ 3rd Armoured Cavalry Regiment, has already resulted in the death of Abu Khalaf, the Al-Qaeda leader, and the capture of more than 1,000 suspects.

How significant will victory in Mosul be? The American commander in the region, Gen. Mark Hertling, calls it “the irreversible point”. It will deprive AQ of an urban base and put them at the mercy of tribal leaders in the countryside. For the terrorists, that means certain death — which will likely force them to find a way out of Iraq without further incident.

Maliki has declared that the terrorist siege of Baghdad and Iraq has collapsed. He blamed unnamed foreign nations for funding the terrorist wave against his nation, and hailed the new Iraqi Army for its tenacity against the radicals of all stripes. While he kept his praise to the Iraqis, the unspoken truth is that the IA could never have survived it without the Bush administration’s shift in strategy and tactics in January 2007, and without George Bush’s tenacity in insisting that we stay and finish the job in Iraq.

And what have we won? AQ has sustained an unmitigated defeat in Iraq. They have lost tens of thousands of recruits and fighters, men that would have otherwise volunteered for other missions in which they didn’t have to face the American military. They have lost their supposedly divine endorsement; why would Allah have called them to action, just to see them destroyed by the infidels? The sheer bloodthirstiness of their actions in Iraq have exposed them as drug-driven demons, not righteous jihadists.

The Times of London has this right: the victory in Mosul gives the West the most spectacular victory of the war. Too bad the American media missed it. (via Ed Morrissey, via Instapundit)

Yeah, it just, uh... "missed" it. Too much else going on, what with A-Rod and Madonna and all. But our newsmedia is not biased. We're just stupid.

Were they in Iraq, (AQ), before our botched invasion and 5 year occupation?

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad to hear that the world's most powerful military has finally chased a bunch of punk-ass terrorists out of a third-world country that they traditionally had no presence in, but you would have to admit that the previous landlord that we evicted did a lot better job of it.

Come on, you 2 geniuses couldn't come up with a better slam than that? Whipping terrorists really grinds on your ass eh Speedy? I bet you'd like it much better if the news was of more American dead. Then you'd have something else to rail on Bush about. God you guys are lame!

In a related story, it sounds like the Iraq govt.'s balls may have finally dropped. They're kicking us out:

The best friend that terrorists have ever had is the ass hole in the WH. They've been playing him like a $20 crack whore.

Actually, the ones who are getting played are the members of the international community organizations like Amnesty International, the UN, that freak show in the Hague, the Democrat controlled congress...

Terrorists are funny that way. They understand who has their back. They know that there will NEVER be any honest, positive reporting on any successes in Iraq and Afghanistan. They were laughing their collective asses off when Harry Reid tried to surrender - what a joke that guy is.

It's part of the terrorist playbook. Lob a couple of RPG's into Israel and immediately go to the UN to negotiate a cease fire. Spray a patrol of US and Iraqi servicemen and retreat into a mosque, then it's an international outrage to the BBC/CBC/MSM when the good guys kill the peaceful worshipers.

You want to talk about getting played, the terrorists are working our court system - including the SCOTUS!! - for lawyers, rules of evidence, trials, juries, you know, the kind of stuff our constitution guarantees actual US citizens.

W has been consistent for 8 years - despite his horrible "approval" ratings. He's been killing these guys (Syrians, Chechens, Jordanians, Iranians) since we invaded Iraq, never waivering.

The terrorists should have just waited for Obama to get elected. Bam Bam will probably use his "community organizer" skills to set them up with public housing and government cheese - you know, just like the London tube bombers, who were all living on the dole!!

Who said it was a slam? Was it in green font? Was there some hidden meaning that you mystically discerned using your Ouija board? Or has Happy Hour been in full swing at your watering hole?

You forgot the bleeding heart liberals in this country who would rather lose that win. they can't stand the idea that we might win the war and bush will stop being blamed for everything. It isn't in their fantasy agenda.

Why do what it takes to win a war when they can tuck their tails between their legs and run away and blame their failure on someone else?
Lets all go protest the war and maybe we can snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, just like we did in Vietnam.

Either when we win the war or when the cowardly democrats surrender. I'm hoping it's the former.

I think Al-Maliki is looking at helping with our exit strategy. I wonder how it will play out vis-a-vis winning the war.

The only prize in this fight is an endless stream of suicide bombers and IED.... and in that, we're the undisputed champions.
