Small town carnivals--memories from being a kid

Took the family to the Auburn Corn Festival today. Auburn is just outside of Midland, Michigan, home of DOW Chemical.

Anyway, we had a great time. I took my son on his first ferris wheel and he loved it.

Man, it sure brought back the memories of hanging out as a teenager down at our annual carnival. The smells, sounds, and atmosphere hasn't changed much.

We went on the swings too but Mom wouldn't let us ride the DEMON LOOP. Pffft.

The kids had a great time. Of course, the carnival food smelled incredible but we didn't get anything.

The Gravitron was my favorite. I don't think I've gone for a spin in 20 years. I loved the alcohol theme. I remember a couple of games where the prizes were Jack Daniels, Budweiser, Miller mirrors. Fun times!

They still have those same mirrors!! Been a long time for me, too.

I didn't play any of the games, either. I was never any good at them but the "hawkers" still try to goad you into playing.

I saw a mirror that had a pot leaf with the words "plant manager" under it. Sweet.

Jeez, you know, I should have taken pictures. DOH!!

How can you go to a small town carnival and NOT EAT ANY FOOD?

Cheeseburgers, kettle corn, and now fried calamari and Tri tip...Isn't that the reason to go?

and Scorps rawk dude!

How about candy apples? I went to the Wyandotte Street Fair today and had one. It's a once a year treat!

Awesome!

Alas too many years have gone by since I was a kid, but I do remember going each year and eating junk til I was ready to puke. About $3 was good for all night in 1965.
