iPhone 2.0 - App Store and Apps!

This morning I updated to iTunes 7.7 and loaded the new 2.0 firmware on iPhone.

The apps and app store are a "game changer" IMFBO (in my fanboy opinion) much in the way the iPhone hardware woke up the handset market.

This is gonna be big, real big.

Best,

Kurt

Where did u get 2.0 from.

Don't see it.

Moses 07-10-2008 03:04 PM

Yeah! Where is 2.0? When I synched my iPhone this AM, it said I had the current version. (1.1.4)

Frig, now I'm in trouble.

Looks like this'll take a few and I told the wife I was leaving 20 minutes ago.

kstar 07-10-2008 03:29 PM

Here you go:
http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPhone/061-4955.20080710.bgt53/iPhone1,2_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw

This is a direct download link, make sure ".ipsw" is the only suffix, you may have to delete a ".zip" in the file name, depending on how your browser is set to handle downloaded files.

After you have the download, launch iTunes 7.7 and hold down the "option" button and then press "Check for Updates" in iTunes and select the new .ipsw file.

It takes 10 minutes or so to update - make sure to do a synch before the update!

Good luck!

stomachmonkey 07-10-2008 03:29 PM

OK, not terrible. ~ 20 minutes with 7 GB's of stuff on the phone. Shoulda deleted my movies first.

Oh well.

Ronbo 07-10-2008 03:45 PM

I just downloaded 6 or 7 of the free apps. The App Store looks nice. I'm going to update the phone tomorrow using the lazy man's way.

Set up Exchange in the car on the ride home. Push works like a charm. Goodbye BlackBerry. Back to one device.

krichard 07-10-2008 06:17 PM

waiting on the jailbreak before I can update :(

jriera 07-10-2008 06:24 PM

Jailbreak already done --> http://www.macrumors.com/iphone/2008/07/10/iphone-2-0-firmware-jailbroken-and-unlocked/

Its done but waiting on Dev Team to release it.

kstar 07-10-2008 08:59 PM

The Apple "2.0" firmware link I posted may be a beta, FWIW.

Info here: http://weblog.infoworld.com/enterprisemac/archives/2008/07/iphone_20_downl.html

While I have had no problems, there are reports of some folks having issues.

2.0 final release will be out in the AM (0800 Eastern) and should show up in software updates.

FYI.

That is huge.

funny that an app for Windows is the killer app for the apple phone.

dd74 07-10-2008 09:55 PM

I almost got a Blackberry today. Did I almost make a mistake or did I make a mistake by not getting it?

Not really. The MS "Office Suite" has been a killer app for Mac for a long time, only less so these days.

edit: Apple has just launched its own version of push tech in it's revamped .Mac services, called "MobileMe". I've been using many of the services today and it is very useful. it should be 100% lit up in a few hours.

MobileMe is that "cloud computing" thing, but the name is not so good, IMO. :)

Just did the auto update to 2.0

Am I missing something? There is virtually no difference.

The only obvious change is the addition of a button for buying/downloading apps.

I expected to see some new and improved features. I am dissapointed.

For example, would it be so hard to add trig and exponents features to the 4 function calculator? Seriously.

Turn the calc sideways.

You'll also notice little things like PW fields now show you last character typed.

Push mail for services that support it like Exchange. If you have multiple email accounts you can selectively set which ones you want to push and which to run on a schedule.

EDGE seems better.

kstar 07-12-2008 01:17 PM

Apps and push via Outlook or MobileMe are the biggies for 2.0 on iPhone1. Security is improved and if you dig around around there is more . . .

Why don't you look for a calculator app? I found 23 such apps and maybe two or three that will do what you want.

Look for RPNCalc.

That's why the App thingy is a big deal. :D

fwiw, one of the guys I work with waited for i2.0 . . . he checked it out, all jazzed, and ended up getting the crackberry. ...8120 IIRC. a very slick phone. He said something about T-mobile handling the email (no charge) and the monthly cost half of the iPhone.

...of course if you want to impress the chicks with your swavey RPN calc on your internet device get the iPhone. ...or one of the Nokia devices -they've had the HP21c RPN fin. calc app for years.

I noticed 2.0 seems to automatically get my "fetch" email. (ie: gmail)

Also, quicktime now plays my vonage voicemails that are sent via email. couldn't do it before.

The batch email move and delete features are nice, as well as being able to search contacts in addition to scrolling. As was mentioned, turn the calc sideways for the scientific calculator.

Evan:

That's a great find!

I just emailed myself a 9MB QT .mov file and opened and played it on my iPhone running 2.0. I don't think was possible before, but I could be mistaken.

Were the trig functions available by turning sideways pre 2.0 ?

That is not intuitive.

How does one do a batch delete of emails? I don't see it.

I guess the intuitiveness of a double-screened scientific calculator activating with a "landscape" tilt is arguable. :)

For batch delete, just look in the upper right corner of the screen when you are viewing your list of emails -> touch the "Edit" button, then you can select the emails to delete . . . or move.

Just last night I missed a call because of this missing feature. It would be so easy to fix. Also, files cannot be password protected independently. You cannot send a photo via text messaging. You cant print wirelessly via iPhone. Still lots of missing features.
