Where to shop for old MB 380SL's?

My dad's cushy job with the company car and free gas of 20 yrs. has finally come to an end. Now he has an excuse to buy a car he really loves and he wants a cherry 380SL. I also lust for one, so I'm happy to help in this search. Besides eBay, are there any enthusiast sites for such cars, sort of like the one for 2002's in today's other big thread?

Z-man turned me onto these guys in Costa Mesa.

Beware, though. Cherry means big $$$ with them. But it's well worth it. They are part of M-B, so you know you're getting the genuine article.

An older 380 SL?

You can buy them for a song here, as Japanese imports. Google "Fine Car Gallery" for example. In Japan the cost of road tax becomes prohibitive when the car gets more than 10 years (I think) old, and a few local shops are importing low mileage/left-hand drive cars from Japan.

Like the Hart to Hart ones? There is what appears to be a nice blue one with blue top parked with a for sale sign in an upscale waterfront neighborhood on my way to work. If you like i could pull over and get the info.

If you go to http://crazedlist.org/ you can search multiple craigslist locations with one click. Really saves some time because you can search the entire region around where you live and not just the local craigslist. Good luck in your search!

Alf, I'm meeting my folks in Seattle in mid-August. I don't know yet how serious my dad is. They're taking a month-long trip out west later this month, doing the Badlands, Sturgis during bike week, Custer Battlefield, then to WA to meet up with the sister, the wife and me, go to Vancouver, etc. After that I suspect he'll start his search in earnest.

Have you ever driven one? Personal preference I guess, but I was really let down. I've driven and worked on quite a few over the years. Small interior, slow!, soft suspension, timing chains. CIS.... Anything around here has rust or is uber spendy.

Thought of something a little older? I had a 280sl for a while, much cooler. MFI was a nice plus.

Yes, I had an ex whose mom had a very well-preseved one. Even after we broke up, her mom called me once in a while for help with it. I drove it plenty and wrenched on it a little. I loved it. But it may have been a grudge thing.
