I am trying to replace the timing chain and timing chain guides on my 1990 300SEL. The problem is that the timing chain cover will not come of. If you look at the picture, you can see the "sleeve" around the bolt that I have circled. It looks like this has to come of in order for the cover to come of all the way. That sleeve will not budge. I already tried a three arm puller.

That 'sleeve' is the front crank snout. It is keyed (key-way). You must first remove the large bolt that secures it. This may take a lot of force. If you have a 1/2" impact and get the gun and socket in there, have at it. If not a large breaker bar to go left-loosey.

Once the bolt is removed the snout should come off with a little work.

have not changed the chain one of those cars (have worked only on diesel MB's) but the procedure typically is to cut the chain (grind mushroom from one of the links) connect the new chain to the old and wind it through. when the new eng appears connect the two new halves together and recrimp the chain with a special crimping tool.

the only need to remove the cover is if you need to replace ramps and or the cog on the crank.

The plastic guides are done. At least the on on the right is broken and the other is not looking so good either. My concern with undoing the large bolt is that the engine will move of TDC. Am I doing to have to remove the head again and reset it?

they make a flywheel lock to remove that bolt - the upper ramp on most of the diesel engines can replaced with out removing the covers the lower - no such luck
