My dad is the 'White trash astrologist'

He had a few lenses left over from various projects so he decided to build some telescopes. Was just using one of them to look at the moon

Yes, but it looks to be a refracting telescope. Kinda like a pirates, arrrgggh. Usually rated with 'magnification'.

Those will magnify, but not much...maybe 10x or 15x, which is plenty for many things. What's important with a telescope is that the front lens captures more light than the eye, so you can see DIM things, not SMALL things. Stuff in the sky is surprisingly large, just too dim to pick out.
