but lets be clear. the guy was hassled because some dimwit "felt" offended. the guy hadn't actually done anything by any objective standard. at least not anything that the school will identify. this is fascism with a smiley face. one person is oppressed and threatened in the name of tolerance. and the school administrators know exactly what they're doing.

non sequitur, changing the subject, losing an argument, interesting concepts, look in a mirror.

This reminds me of the oppression scene in Holy Grail. Fascism? Here we (very possibly, and conspicuously missing from the "news" reports linked) have a guy who may have deliberately harrassed a co-worker. For example, let's say Worker A doesn't like Worker B. Worker A learns that Worker B is bothered by the song Dixie. Worker A sings Dixie in the workplace without ceasing. Worker A is warned. Et cetera. Here, Worker A is arguably within his rights. Then again, he is deliberately harrassing Worker B. The "news" reports hint at this, and fail to tell that part of the story.

We have an administrator who arguably made a suboptimal decision, which was subsequently reversed by the University. If this serves as proof of rampant fascism in higher education to you guys, then.......carry on.

We have been told time and time again, in my workplace, that it matters not whether what we say or do is "offensive". All that matters is that some one was "offended". This is my company's official position on the matter; developed, I'm sure, by its army of lawyers after studying applicable case law. Pretty frightening standard, really.

This thread is yet more proof that people go to college to become stupid.

There was nothing academic about this story, I cannot tell why you are all clumping "academia" with this instead of "administration". The latter group is the bane of the former group just as it's the bane to modern society.

And we all know that school administrators NEVER rise the ranks from teacher to administrator.

Despite your green text, in the university world...unlikely. Departments like HR were not of the same cloth as the educational departments. See, professors are still, by and large, there to teach kids and do research that increased the general education of the world, despite what some rightwingers claim. The administration however is there to make the professor's lives hell.

So, you qualify for for an honorary degree? There'd be a quirky irony in using the sheepskin to clean up after yourself.

Okay. I'll accept that. Because it means that any instance that has the appearance of (if you use your imagination) an organization acting inappropriately means all similar organizations are completely out of control. It means.....that the Republican Party is a bunch of gay men.

You sure about that, Tobra? You sure all conservatives are gay?

How does one "qualify" for an honorary degree?
