How much ammo is too much ammo?
 

Recent threads and enclosed pictures got me to thinking...

I frequently see in the local news where "x guns and x thousand rounds of ammo" were confiscated during a bust/arrest. They sensationalize the number of rounds of ammo like it was a terrorist training camp or something.

Personally, I have several thousand rounds of ammo. Does that sound like a lot? I don't think so. Heck, I buy two boxes of bulk .22 from Wally World and I now have "more than a thousand rounds of ammo"! The horror!

So with my 1000+ rounds of .22, and let's say 4 to 10 boxes of ammo for each firearm (so for arguments sake let's say I own 8-10 different calibers), I might have around 4000 rounds of ammo. And I know many honest, hard-working, law-abiding citizens that keep 10x the amount of ammo I keep as a hedge against rising prices and potential lack of availability in the future (no, they aren't survivalist nut-jobs).

So... how much ammo is too much?

Or maybe the better question is, how much is not enough? :D

If it weighs you down while running from the zombies, then it's too much ammo.

ammo is like an insurance policy. need it when ya need it. shot so often over the years i just buy when i find a deal. your 4000 rds is a paltry number in comparison to what i have ratholed away over the years. with (3) COUNT'EM BULL ELK TAGS this november we will be pulling guns from safe and lighting off quite a few rounds getting back into the swing of things. its just like riding a bike, once you get your comeups down, know yer weapon backwards and forwards it all comes together when the species you are hunting presents itself. when afghan and iraq wind down in the coming years ammo prices will come down and thats when i will buy again.

The press needs to sensationalize news to sell newspapers. Furthermore, most of the reporters are most likely limp-wristed, panty-bunched, gun-fearing liberals, so to them, "lots of ammo" = whacknut/terrorist/baby-killer.

I am not aware of any regulations regarding the amount of ammo one can legally possess. I imagine if your house were stuffed to the rafters, the local fire dept. might have an issue.

If someone is shooting at you....then 1 round is too many. If you are shooting back, then there is no such thing as too much!

I keep a moderate supply for all of my different rounds. (It was one of the reasons I chose to standardize on calibers. (45 ACP for pistols), 22 for pistols and rifles (hell its fun and cheap). 7.62X39 for defense, and 3030 for hunting. 12 gauge for home defense....
(Imagine if I didn't standardize!)

Anyway, I keep about 200 rounds of each, with the exception of 22 which I have thousands of.

Guys, it's time to stockpile. Ammo prices are climbing like oil and will continue to do so until we're out of Iraq. If Obama gets in, be prepared for insane new gun laws and/or ammunition taxes. Get it while you can. You can't have too much. When the revolution comes, the only thing more expensive than ammo will be food.

I agree, it's a media or perception thing. Rather than the amount, it seems it should be more important who has it. If you find 2k rounds in my place, so what? If you find 2k rounds in a crack house (with criminals) that's a problem.

I thought it was a waste of $$ to stockpile until prices starting skyrocketing. Not anymore.

I probably have a 1000 rounds of .22, same with .45 and 9 mm.

When my father in law passed away, I got a call from the wife saying that "he had a TON of ammo" She just kept saying "I can't belive how much is in there"

I came over to help clean it up.

1 spent 50 bmg.
3 M1 garand clips
a half of a box of 38 special
3 box's of 50 count 22 long
5 box's of 30 cal for a carbine
and 18 30/30


for a non-shoooter more than 20 seems like alot



i wish that I would have hoarded 3 times what I shot of 7.62 x 51 when it was cheap and I had cash.

There was an estate ammo sale here a few weeks ago. This guy had his entire garage filled with ammo. It was probably in the hundreds of thousands of rounds. His family advertised it on the local gun BBS and that the sale would start at 8:00am on Sunday and not to come early or camp out in front of the house. It was a full fledged stampede. I don't know how much cash it brought in, but the photos were just unbelievable.

If you're renting space for it, it's too much.

If properly stored in a climate controlled area, I personally do not think that there is such a thing as too much. As mentioned earlier, that is unless you have to pay a storage facility in order to keep it stored properly. When properly stored, most, modern munitions, will remain virtually unaffected and safe to use, in great firing condition for decades.

I feel naked if the round count drops into 3 figures.
