Used VW Wagon Question: high milage

Friend of mine had an '04 1.8T. It had all kinds of interesting electrical "features", like intermittant headlights and auto locking brakes.

His favorite was when his wife and kids would get locked in the car, and couldn't get out. He'd get frantic calls from his wife, with kids crying in the background. Fun stuff.

Great cars to drive, but terrible to own. After my last VW, I'd look at Citroens and Renaults

When was the last time the "lifetime" tranny fluid was replaced?

Engine sludge was an issue with the Passat 1.8's due to the design of the oil pan.

Would an OIL FLUSH fix any sludging??? is this caused by non Synthetic oil or is it with all oils?

The owner would have to provide detailed maintenance records, if not I would pass......
