I used to use Craigslist exclusively to hire. Unfortunately, the majority of the applicants were whack-nuts, losers and the incompetent. Only hiring via "word-of-mouth" these days.

They've been charging here in LA for some time. The applicant pool is definitely a mixed bag. If you like screening 300+ resumes to find one worth not deleting, go for it.

I see no problem with that. The servers don't run for free. And if it keeps the ebay from gaining more control over the company I am all for it.

So if you need to hire technical people (auto) what is the best medium in todays market place to seek out those candidates? Newspaper? recruiters?, etc?

I've been using CareerBuilder lately and the applicant quality on average seems better than Monster, which I used for years. Nonetheless I am resorting more and more to recruiters to find people for certain slots, and it's still hard even with their help.

Note that you will get spammed like you can't believe on whatever email address you use in these job postings -- DO NOT use your normal/personal email!

Been looking for a back end web guy with a very specific skill set.

Went the normal routes and got the normal crap, "I know Front Page!".

Did a targeted search on Linked In.

Takes time since you need to "manually" weed through the hits.

It's interesting because you get to see their employment history, projects they've done, can tell if they are currently out of work, in a situation a long time or short time, (leery of people that are at a gig for a couple of months and are ready to jump).

Found a kid, great skill set, finishing his last year as a Computer Science major, focus on Game Programming, (we are a video game publisher so bonus there)

Need another artist and he brought in his friend today, she is majoring in Game Art, again perfect skill set for what I need help with right now.

I am tired of headhunters who send you crap candidates and have no clue what your requirements are regardless of how specific the job description.

Try it, more work for you but it's a great resource.

The bonus is you contact them so you don't get 3000 resumes of crap to sift through.

I'll second linkedin - also CL careerbuilder, yahoo jobs.
