AVG free virus protection crashes XP

When I run a full computer scan it consistantly blue screens my XP installation. I'm running the new 8.0 free version.
I've been running AVG for a couple years with no problems. And I have it on 2 other XP machines, also no problems. They don't have a tech support contact available for the free version (ya get what you pay for). Any suggestions? |

Are the blue screen errors random?
Did you install the AVG toolbar as well? Search for this: *152j0et4j.exe |

 I didn't install the toolbar.
I don't know what you are asking about the errors being random. I can reproduce this at will. All I have to do is launch a full computer scan. Search for that file turned up nothing. |

There is not much on this. There is spyware that will cause AVG 8 to BSOD and it also is possible that you have some bad memory and AVG is trying to access it, causing the BSOD. I was asking if the BSOD errors are the same or do different things fail?

Do you happen to have Nero? If not, what do you use to burn CD's?
	 |

Hmmm, just put AVG on several computers and no BSOD on any of them...

If it was me, I would download Ccleaner and run the registry scanner. If that didn't fix it, I would fire up Ccleaner again & use "tools" to uninstall AVG. Next I would download Avast anti-virus (more highly rated and my preference anyway). When you're finished, run the registry scanner again, done!

Windows XP had an update last week that effectively disabled third-party firewalls and anti-spyware programs.
In my case, all of the software I use (Adaware and Zone Alarm) had updates already ready. Your other option is to disable the software in question until an update is available. |

There is an 8.0.135 update which fixes crashs with updates and webshield. Not sure about the BSOD.
From the WikiAnswers site: Q: Why would AVG crash Windows when you scan the directory downloaded program files to clean trojanhorse PSW Biss h? In: PSW Spyware A: Click start>click run type in msconfig and then press enter. Goto the start up tab and uncheck everything except your anti virus.click ok and reboot. When you come back to the desktop check the box 'do not show this message again" and click ok . Then run AVG and see if it crashes. Also update AVG [edit: I think Legion has the answer] |

I've got Adaware and Spybot on the machine in question. Maybe related, I'll try a few things.

Tried deleting spybot and adaware. still crashed.
Deleted AVG and reinstalled with the latest download. Still crashed. Ran registry cleaner. still crashed. disabled all other startup programs. Still crashed. Deleted AVG and installed Avast. No more crashes. |

At least it is not crashing. Keep the RAM in mind for the future. Install some other app in the future and the computer starts to blue screen again...
