poll: cordless 1/2 impacts. whose best???
 

about to pull trigger on one. 1/2 cordless impact for porsche lug nuts(96ft-lbs)

my choices are all because of local factory service centers.

BOSCH

DEWALT

MAKITA

SNAP-ON

i can go to CPO BOSCH.com and pick up a 1/2 18v w/(2) batteries/charger/case for $289.00 or buy new for alot more. steering towards the bosch.

anyfeedback???? good bad ugly???? will it take (20) lug nuts OFF and install (20) lug nuts allowing all (4) tires to be changed out on (1) full battery pack?????????

I've heard very good things about "the mother of all impact wrenches" made by snap on. Not cheap, but very good. A friend has one and loves it, changes the lugs on his 'vette over multiple weekends on one charge.

I have used the Snap On, De Walt and now Makita. I preferred the Snap On but my buddy who owns the tools prefers the Makita. He reckons the De Walt was moderately useful for stirring tea and that was it.

Get the Long Acre from Safe Racer (or Wayne if he has it). BY FAR the best IMO. $259.

my electrician ECHOED the same sentiments on the dewalt. stirring tea........LMFAO!

I have a Dewalt which is pretty nice but it didn't compare to the Milwaukee that I borrowed at the track when mine failed to break my lug nuts. Definitely worth a look.

$500 bucks for snap on. holy ned! yep usually tools like this are private labeled. but 600 ft lbs!!!! wow! i could do a pitstop on my K-3500 duallie if i had enough batteries! their 140 ftlbs on those lug nuts!

Which DeWalt do you have? My DW059 is rated for 300 ft./lbs. If that ain't enough, the 36v DC800KL will go to 325 ft./lbs. Never had mine fail to remove a lug.

I like my Dewalt, yes Snap-On is nicer, but for my use, isn't worth double the cost.

Paid $99 for mine on E-Bay. Didn't come with battery or charger, but I already had those from my other 18v tools.

I would encourage you to patronize our host, PelicanParts first. They carry several models (Makita, etc).

I have both, including the old Harbor Freight model which I take the track. It was $100 and has been great but unfortunately is NLA. Their new ones can't cut the mustard. All of the ones mentioned above work well from what I've seen. The Longacre version breaks lugs no problem and I even used mine on the big 915 transmission shoulder nut. Caveat Emptor, I sell them If you are interested in the the Longacre version I carry them for about $40 less than saferacer.

Don't get me wrong...power tools are cool. But unless you're in a real hurry to change lug nuts, greater torque accuracy can be obtained doing them by hand...I used a 1/2" drive Snap-on Torque wrench...

A small amount of never seeze on the curved face of the lug nuts to prevent galling...tighten in an alternating pattern, 96 ft. pounds.

My favorite 19mm socket was the aluminum one sold by Stoddards...(sorry wayne)
The nylon insert soft sockets wear too quickly.

To remove, I used the same socket with a 1/2" drive breaker bar...

You never install anything with a power torque wrench. Removal only. (Shhh...don't mention this to the tire guys @ WalMart)...

Charles contact me offline if interested. That's for the 1 battery model with charger and case. There's really no need to pay for the second battery unless you plan on using it for more than a weekend without charging. My two batt. model is still abt $15 less. :)

i have a milwalkee (i totally mis-spelled that, sorry). i can do three 911's at a track day on one battery easy. on and off. it is on the heavy side tho. it works circles around my buddies, dewalt.

i will cstreit . just looked up longacre 24 volts vs. 18volts for bosch. i like that.

my drill on lug nuts from when i was 16 yrs old at johnson bozzani porsche audi.......

small amount anti-seize on each . tighten down-manjuelly. then use my trusty recently calibrated PROTO TORQUE wrencho to 96ft lbs.

actually im trying to kill ALOT OF HUMMINGBIRDS with one stone. my compressor at home is CRAP CRAFTSMAN SEARS EL JUNKO DORKO KAH KAH joke of a roll around compressor that barely runs my 3/8 air ratchet properly! sooooo to make it short i figured i could go to track, and have my cake at home for various vehicles all 1/2 ton chevies and the porsche at 96ft lbs. last i checked my 1 ton duallie was also 140 ft lbs torque on the nuts just like to 1/2 ton chevies. also i could use on quad tires since it seems i always get a flat elk hunting with all the damn weight we carry!

patrick moto here uses the snap on with a really cool soft socket that doesnt break the plastic innards out like the vertex socket i bought.

Well I think you're on the right path... I bought and returned like 3 models before I settled on one that worked. Most will advertise 200 ft-lbs or torque but then they can't even break a lug-nut off. It's a crying damn shame that the HF model was discontinued. I've been carrying/using one in my race trailer for 5 years without fail.... The new ones they offer just can't cut it.

We had a Dewalt at the old shop & after I broke a few sockets trying to get a lug off, I gave it a shot, got it off. After that I dropped the $$ & bought my own, been very happy with it.
