Talk radio is not news, never has been and has never claimed to be such. That they usually draw much larger audiences than newscasts is a whole different matter.

Anyway, I'm dying to hear some hate radio. Please tell me where I can find it. Or save me the trouble and just tell me what it is.

Jay Severin, Laura Ingraham, Mark Levin, Monica Crowley, etc. I don't listen to Rush, and Bill O' was pulled from the Boston market, but they are all part of the mix.

All they do is take a story out of the media, twist it, blame someone else for it, divide the country with innuendo and speculation, lie (yes lie), blame the media outlet and generally spew hate. Any of those shows I've listed, one listening and the hate would be obvious.

All in the name of selling advertising and Chinese chotchke crap. They are the only people in media that personally profit from spinning the news that other media produce, putting an emotional twist on it to whip their early and top of bell curve listeners into frenzy and keep them listening.

Parasites.

Is this another inside joke, or am I the only one who can see that Shaun was joking?

Obviously the pallets weren't unmarked, if they were, they would have gotten lost in the USPS en route to Iraq.

Shaun @ Tru6 07-23-2008 09:55 AM

Whew! thank you Mike!

cairns 07-23-2008 10:12 AM

DD I disagree. I'm very conservative on some issues (taxes/role of government/war on terrorism/financing UN/unions, etc. and very liberal on others (drugs/gay rights/abortion etc.). I think a lot of us want to read unbiased news as well as intelligent commentary from both sides.

I for one am more than willing to pay for it. But when a paper becomes as skewed as the Post I simply can't believe it any more- and I want some value for my $. I love their editorials- largely liberal- but their news department long ago forgot why they're there and the news editors are incredibly liberal.

And while I believe the Wash Times news is biased from the other side it costs a lot less and they have a terrific automotive and travel section- free from any political commentary.

In contrast, the Post's automotive editor knows absolutely nothing about cars and always manages to insert some liberal drivel in an article that's supposed to be an automotive review. He thinks a Porsche has a V6 (no I am not making this up).

In sum I think the major papers are losing a lot of readers like me- who are looking for value- honest news and facts and well written, interesting stories- along with a balance of editorials from both sides of the fence.

cairns 07-23-2008 10:18 AM

Funny Shaun I'm pretty conservative and I don't know half of those people- and have never (other than Rush and O'Reilly briefly) heard any of them. And if you think Rush and O'Reilly are "hate radio" what do you think Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann are? In fact your statement:

"All they do is take a story out of the media, twist it, blame someone else for it, divide the country with innuendo and speculation, lie (yes lie), blame the media outlet and generally spew hate. Any of those shows I've listed, one listening and the hate would be obvious.

...sounds exactly like Olbermann to me- who I've also listened to briefly.

Rick Lee 07-23-2008 10:28 AM

Mark Levin was on my local AM station in VA, but I haven't heard him out here in AZ. Here we have JD Hayworth. I don't like Mark Levin, but I've never heard anything of his bordering on hate and certainly not from Laura Ingraham. I've heard plenty of viewers and callers say very hateful things to them, but never heard them come close to that in talking about someone else. But I guess that depends on one's definition of hate. If pointing out the errors of one's views or their own hypocrisy constitutes hate, then I guess most of us here on PPOT are haters too.

Yes, I understand your point of view on this. But opinions like yours are not the main reason readership is down for newspapers. Advertising is down across the board for many newspapers, which is their bread and butter. Fraudulent articles that NYT has suffered can be a large reason why readership is down for that paper. In short, there's more than one way to skin a cat, and also ruin a newspaper. Biasness, again, is pretty far down the food chain, IMO, as usually a reader knows what they're getting into as soon as they pick a paper off a newsstand.

Hate radio is Michael Savage, but he's not Republican hate radio (just ask him :p )

Exactly?

Can you show me the Keith Olberman online store? the Keith Olberman Premium Club Membership?

yesterday on the Jay Severin show, a caller said he wanted Obama executed for treason for going over to the Middle East. And Jay agreed.

You will never, never hear that kind of stuff in Liberal media. Sadly, you hear it all the time on Republican Hate Talk Radio.

When you watch Hardball and Countdown, they have a variety of guests who discuss the issues. they don't pull something from the NYTimes, spend 5 minutes hating the NYTimes, 1 minute explaining the story, 5 minutes blaming their favorite Liberal Scapegoat, etc.

that's the Hate Formula for making $ on the backs of dividing the country.

I might have to agree with you on this one. I'd never heard him before I moved here. He is an angry nut.

You rarely hear any liberal radio talk shows because they can't get the audience to generate the ad revenue. How's Air America do?

However, I've heard plenty of such things from liberals before. Remember one Congressman's comment about how "this Congress needs to be taken out and shot"? There's no end to the list of such statements by either side. I don't recall anyone as big as Rush or BOR saying anything close to that though. Plenty of smalltime hosts might say stupid stuff to garner some shock factor. But they're small potatos.

Dude, have you got rose-colored hearing aids or what?

Just go to his website: http://marklevinshow.com/

Mark's whole schtick is the "meltdown" screaming about liberals. It's hilarious, and sad that so many early and middle bell-curvers eat it up. the stupidity that comes out of caller's mouths is why our country is in such sad shape. We are a nation of morons if most callers are representative of our country.

jyl 07-23-2008 10:43 AM

I have not read the bulk of this thread, so sorry if this rehashes - but the premise of the OP is wrong. NYT's weak earnings don't reflect the paper's content or ideological bias, they reflect a fundamental problem for the newspaper industry.

- Pretty much all newspapers are having financial challenges. This is a secular industry problem, not a New York Times problem or a liberal media problem. Here is an article that recaps 1Q newspaper earnings, so you can see this. http://www.forbes.com/home/markets/2007/04/19/newspapers-tribune-gannett-markets-equity-cx_lh_0419markets29.html?partner=links
- The problem is not "New York Times" readership. NYT readership is up, including good growth in online readership, and NYT circulation revenues are up +4.6%, admittedly some of this is due to higher home delivery charges but notice NYT circulation revenues are growing while circulation revenues in the company's other newspapers (in Boston and in smaller cities) are flat to declining. That doesn't even count NYT's online revenue growth, which is growing >10%. http://www.marketwatch.com/news/story/new-york-times-profit-plummets/story.aspx?guid=%7B4AE745DE%2D3A04%2D43AD%2DB13E%2 D06C655986F55%7D&siteid=yhoof
- The problem is a secular move - advertising dollars are going away from traditional media (e.g. newspapers, broadcast TV, etc) to higher-growth, more targeted, and more measurable media (e.g. Internet). GOOG's growth has to come from someone's pocket.
- The additional problem is cyclical - tighter advertising budgets and less classified/help-wanted advertising in a recessionary period.

Why would I go to his website? I couldn't care less what's on there. I don't even care for his show. He was usually on for the last 10 min. of my commute home when I lived in DC, so I caught some of his show most weeknights. Sure, I heard him yell once in a while and he wasn't real nice to some callers. But I never heard him advocate hurting or killing someone. What do you consider hateful? I hate plenty of politicians, but that doesn't make me a hateful person. I have too much other stuff to worry about.

"But opinions like yours are not the main reason readership is down for newspapers. Advertising is down across the board for many newspapers, which is their bread and butter. "

I completely concur.

And Shaun can't we agree that there are both right and left wing spewers of hate and vitriol? For every O'Reilly or Levin I'm sure there's a Maher or Franken etc.

Do you think that they should be regulated more? Maybe told what to print? Should there be government watchdogs put into place to keep their biases at bay?

I'll give you Franken, he's a dufus. Maher is really funny. Wish I had a TV.
