WELLINGTON, New Zealand - A family court judge in New Zealand has had enough with parents giving their children bizarre names here, and did something about it.

Just ask Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii. He had her renamed.

Judge Rob Murfitt made the 9-year-old girl a ward of the court so that her name could be changed, he said in a ruling made public Thursday. The girl was involved in a custody battle, he said.

The new name was not made public to protect the girl's privacy.

'Very poor judgment'
"The court is profoundly concerned about the very poor judgment which this child's parents have shown in choosing this name," he wrote. "It makes a fool of the child and sets her up with a social disability and handicap, unnecessarily."

The girl had been so embarrassed at the name that she had never told her closest friends what it was. She told people to call her "K" instead, the girl's lawyer, Colleen MacLeod, told the court.

In his ruling, Murfitt cited a list of the unfortunate names.

Registration officials blocked some names, including Fish and Chips, Yeah Detroit, Keenan Got Lucy and Sex Fruit, he said. But others were allowed, including Number 16 Bus Shelter "and tragically, Violence," he said.

New Zealand law does not allow names that would cause offense to a reasonable person, among other conditions, said Brian Clarke, the registrar general of Births, Deaths and Marriages.

Clarke said officials usually talked to parents who proposed unusual names to convince them about the potential for embarrassment."

Some people should be sterilized before they can further contaminate the gene pool.

How about "Cleofus", "Lewanda" and "Shaniqua"?

How about "Barack"?

I'd like to be present if you and mule watched an episode of backyardigans together.

'course we'd have to put plastic down so when your heads exploded the mess would be contained.

Jeez, cut it out. Those are good tribal names, a lot of heritage in those names.

Are we discussing surnames or given names?

Barack...

When I worked at the RNC, we had a donor who called in once in a while named George Washington America. He was an immigrant, so he'd obviously changed his name as an adult. But it was his real, legal name and we had his checks with that name on them.

There was a woman in WalMart the other day yelling for her kids..."Lexus" and "Mercedes"...This was in the automotive dept. I thought she was asking about oil filters. :)

M'kay,

I guess there is a shortage of murderers, robbers, and rapist in NZ seeing as a judge has time to waste on this trivial BS.

Like they couldn't just call the kid Talula

What was it Frank Zapa named his kids?

There was a kid in my high school named Kurt Rodgers. He had a huge a$s so we started calling him Butt Rodgers. But then we merged Butt and Kurt and just started calling him Burt. I think it worked very well.

Man, some of you guys are friggin hopeless. I was going to post on this same subject figuring it was kind of a fun topic and relatively harmless to discuss (unless of course you're the kid that was given the weird name).

But of course some guys are desperate to be in the "in crowd" here by offering up the very latest Barack Obama/anything Democratic party-related jab that they have to make ANY subject political or race related.

Just wondering, don't you suppose to the people that pick names like Shaniqua or Lewanda, that they roll their eyes over names like Houston, Buffy, or Kierstan?

I roll my eyes at all those names. I kinda feel sorry for them.

I've got some good ones from when my wife worked in the ghetto, but I think they'd end up getting me banned we'll just leave it at how my wife put it: "ohh poor kid, he's going to get nicknamed 'spunk' in middle school" and the others second syllable in her name was pronounced theed

Oh man. That's got to pretty much seal their fate as future strippers and/or porn stars.
