How about Ft. Lauderdale?

Same question as Akron....been asked about a position in Florida, Ft. Lauderdale. How is the economy and such in the area? Medical company, NPD. Can people afford to live there and such? Is it too darn hot there?

Thanks,

I'm in Ft. Laud. There is good/bad.

Good: Economy is strong. Plenty of money floating around. Housing is coming down, although insurance/property taxes are going up. No, you won't be able to buy something similar (size) as you have in N. Carolina. Weather is hot/muggy, but not unbearable (unless you're a roofer...or a land surveyor) during the summer months. However, once September rolls around, through May, you are in paradise.

Bad: ****** loser capitol of the world. Every dirt-bag, degenerate, scammer, fast-talking guido, criminal and their mother is here. Can't wait to GTFO permanently!

Not a good place to raise a family, but definitely a good place to make $$$.

Oh, believe me....I went from "Mr. Nice Guy" to "raging a-hole" after only a few years here. My family/friends don't believe I'm the same person. When I visit my home out West, I start to settle down back to my "normal self".

Any further south and you better know Spanish.

True, true. Almost every job description in Miami indicates "Spanish required". When I work on jobsites down there, the local tradesmen automatically assume I speak Spanish and start blathering away until I say "huh?"... never needed a translator on a jobsite before, until I worked in Miami.

I didn't speak Spanish when I was in Miami...and I was teaching some kids who had come ashore.

The one good thing about Ft. Lauderdale was that you already had a 50 mile headstart for heading up the coast on the weekend to Daytona or St. Augustine.

You can function in Miami without Spanish, but if you go/live/work where the "working man" hangs, it's all Spanish.

At those places I learned how to point at which Cuban coffee I wanted :p

I also quickly found the 3 or so redneck bars in town...
