Shadowban

I read an interesting thing on /. yesterday. The topic was what should mods do about internet bullies and trolls.

The most interesting answer, IMO, was the "shadowban". This is done by allowing the bully or troll to continue to post, only his/her posts are invisible to everyone but themselves!.

They keep posting and get no response and eventually (hopefully) go away.

Best,

So, what do want to talk about? :)

edit: It would have been funny if no one had replied to this thread. Wait, no it wouldn't have!

Doesn't one have to register to post here?

To post, but not to read. You can read a thread you posted on without logging in.

Just my two cents ...

That's a good point - hadn't thought of that.

The solution is simple. Delete and ban. The quicker the better. Delete *every* post the user has ever made in the original account, and any followup accounts. They get the message real quick that even if they get a post by, everything they write and spend time on will be deleted. Unless you're one of those truly crazy people who fill thousands of journals with their own writing, this will stop everyone.

That's true and I agree totally.

I just liked the image of someone posting to themselves and not getting any response. :) Kind of reminds me of me . . . sometimes.

Best,

Set up your own private forum and post to your hearts content. :p

Perhaps forum software could restrict the rate of posts by a new member. E.g. for the first 6 months after registering, a member can only post 3 times a day. The idea being that someone who jumps into a forum looking to troll will get frustrated and go somewhere else.

I have no idea if any BBS software does this, it is just an idea that popped up.

Trolls aren't really that big of an issue...

However if Wyane allowed it, PP would be filled with ads for Nike SHoes, Cell phones, and Viagra. Those guys don't look for replies they just dump their load on us and move on to the next board.

I suspect by now we've banned half of western europe. :)

I still say the "trash can" - forum that the offender is only allowed to post in.
