I installed an update last night (KB 951748) before I went to bed, and I have no internet connectivity today. YIPEEEEEE!!!!!
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I have a dual boot XP Pro / Vista Ultimate machine, and am posting this from the Vista side, over the same connection that doesn't work with the recently updated XP Pro. I get an IP Address with ipconfig. It will release, and renew this Address also. I have tried repairing the connection through Control Panel / Network Connections also. No Go. The internet connection settings, along with the LAN settings look unchanged. Connected through a cable modem, with a MediaCom Connection. No Hub, Residential Gateway, or Router. It's Straight from the Modem, to the computer. Any Guesses? ibsomeonesaysgetamac ![]() |

Turn modem off, wait 10 seconds and turn back on. If that doesn't work call your ISP and have them check your connection.

Do yo happen to have ZoneAlarm installed? There are a lot of reports about this KB and causing the same problem you are having.
Try uninstalling the KB951748 update.

Scott R : No, the IP is 12.205.129.XXX
Mule : The PC and Modem have been reset. It is not a Modem Issue. I am posting from the same machine. If I were to shutdown, boot into XP Pro, I would have no Internet connection. Then, If I were to shutdown from XP, and then reboot into Vista, I would have internet. |

It's Zone alarm. I switched my ZA firewall level to "medium" from "high" and had instant internet access. I could toggle my internet off by changing the firewall level, it seem pretty clear that it's the problem.

Also, as a warning...I've heard that SP3 for XP is in the pipeline, and if you DON'T want it right now, you best be turning off your Windoze automatic updates for a while

SP3 is already out. Not much of a problem.

WOW This is better than Instant Messaging!
SloDave : Yes, I am running ZoneAlarm, But I looked through those settings as well. It didn't appear that anything had changed in the allowed programs list. I figured as much about the KB causing problems. Let me reboot into XP, uninstall the update, and see what happens. |

Was it in the automatic updates, or was it something you could install manually? I was warned about it being inserted without you knowing it...

This is the problem. Most people have to set the ZA settings to medium to get the Internet back. There is a blurb, that says to leave the KB installed and lower the ZA settings, as this fix is more important to leave in place than uninstall. This KB has to do with fixing a vulnerability with DNS and DNS poisoning.

I installed it manually to test. I have not had it automatically install on machines I have worked on, as it is easier to use the standalone I keep on a thumbdrive. Saves from wasting time downloading over and over.

Now, will ZA make an update to allow "full" firewall with the new KB?

Boys (and girls) WE HAVE A WINNER!!!!!!!!
The Grand Prize Goes To Pazuzu! Slodave, where did you read that? I searched the KB before I posted, and didn't see any mention of ZoneAlarm. Pazuzu, SP is set to NOT install automaticaly on my machine. It's been sitting there in my startup area for a couple of weeks now. I need to do a format, and a clean install anyway. I'm going to slipstream SP3 into an install disc, but I've just been too lazy to do it. I just had to explain it to my better half at her shop too. She's been on the phone all day with Verizon. Thanks Guys! I owe you one! |

I hate to be the sore loser, but check two posts above Pazuzu.
![]() The info was on DSLreports.com in the forums. It's all over the place though. Fromo the MS newsgroups: http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.windowsupdate&tid=f169d36e-4623-47c3-b248-24be1ef0d9e5&cat=en_US_56d1dd45-de9e-4fc5-9bc1-2d1d0de6daee&lang=en&cr=US&sloc=&p=1 Windows did an automatic update last night on my laptop, but I was using it and after a few interruptions asking if I wanted to restart, I turned WU off. BTW, it's a good idea to have a broadband router in between your cable modem and computer. I'm going to guess that the I.P. number on your computer does not start with 192.168.x.x. There is a good chance that your computer can be "seen" on the Internet. P.S. I already slipstreamed SP3 into XP Home, XP Pro (retail and OEM), Dell XP Home. Makes it so much easier to reinstall on machines.

DOH!
I have to concur with slodave, he did point it out first (I even replied to that one). Pazuzu, you get second place (but you are still a winner in my heart ![]() ![]() Slodave, you are right about the router, I used to have a Linksys in there but I got tired of having to reset it every 20 minutes or so. It amazed me that the South Park Internet episode looked just like my Router. Did you use RVM Integrator? I've not done the research on slipstreaming SP3 yet, can you do it over a slipstreamed SP2 with a custom winnt.sif file? Or will I have to use a clean XP Pro SP1? |
