Stoneslide

So we're up at the cabin and wanted to head back to town today. I'm just warming up the Porsche and my neighbour comes out and tells me the only road in and out of here is closed due to a "stoneslide". Stoneslide? WTF?

Check it out. Highways department say it might take a "couple of days" to clear. Seems they have to do some blasting.

What's underneath? Nothing I hope.

Dottore 07-30-2008 11:04 AM

I hope no one is underneath.

Wow! Looks like a whole bunch of people were *almost* underneath:

Blame Canada!

I got nailed with a rock on that hwy., same location. Dodged most of the stone slide.
Rock the size of a melon came down, pounded the drivers fender down, bounced back up , hit the windshield right in front of me. Knocked the windshield in, far enough that my fingers, on the wheel, were against the windshield. I was so freaked out that i pushed the window back a bit, drove home, approx 30 minute drive, looking through that hole in the windshield.

Nah, it's the American's fault. Leftovers from the latest LA quake! Go ahead, invade us - I dare ya!:p:p:p

The family fortune was lost in support of the War of 1812. Slowly saving. One day.;)

Good one! On balance, I can't think of better neighbours to have than Americans ...! Wait a minute, stop trying to fool us, Brooklyn is a separate country!:D

Obama will stop rockslides.

Do you have access to food on your side?

CRIPES!!! Talk about a pucker factor!!!

I've come around mountain roads and had to brake hard to avoid the VW sized boulders, but I've never seen them come down, and always assumed that it would never really happen when someone was right/there...

Oh yes. No worries on that score. Supermarkets. Tons of restaurants. Wine stores. Sushi bars. It's no hardship being here. Just a huge nuisance having to rearrange one's life.

That said some friends just dropped by who were supposed to be on this afternoon's Hong Kong flight in order to board a cruise ship. They've missed that; even the float planes and heli-jets that fly in here were full.

Gogar 07-30-2008 02:29 PM

I don't know. GWB hates rockslides.

mike55 07-30-2008 02:54 PM

I missed the slide by a couple of hours. I could think of worse places to be stuck than the Whistler area. Hopefully no one's under there. According to the news, a truck was "grazed" by one of the rocks....

Mother nature can be a real Edited - language removed, Z-man that way.

Hawktel 07-30-2008 04:06 PM

I saw a couple of ones like that growing up in Oregon. Never had a rock hit me yet though like Creaturecat!

Better to be lucky than good.

Latest word is 5 days before the road re-opens.

Looks like I'm going to get that deck painted.

They were initially quoting 24 hours... as soon as I saw the pics, I figured they'd been smokin' some of BC's finest!

I was going to suggest a burn through the Duffy Lake canyon to get home :D, but its probably mired in traffic right now. Best to just stay put!

Dottore 07-30-2008 07:10 PM

...problem is even the Squamish crowd is burning through Duffy Lake this evening, hoping to get away for the long weekend.

The wine cellar is well stocked, so we've decided to stay put—and paint the deck.
