I'm not calling anybody 'liar', but have the space fellas proven anything yet?

Long past time for NASA to amend it's mandate and to get into the alternative energy research effort.

They proved that there is water ice on Mars. Does that count?

In Trek's eyes, probably not.

You know, the machine that may be on Mars was built by men, so how can we trust the alleged measurements of this supposed space ship? :D

I'm holding out for the discovery of Russell's teapots. It's just a matter of time. :)

The moon is NOT made of cheese.

If those pervs would have donated all that money to the food pantry then nobody would have gone hungry. And don't even get me started on those guys that spend money on sports cars. If they would have just bought a used Ford Focus we could have cured cancer by now.

There is a difference. One is PEOPLE spending their hard-earned money the way they wish. They call that FREEDOM.
The other is a GOVERNMENT taking that hard-earned money away from the people against their will, and squandering it on extremely expensive, inefficient, and irrelevant experiments (like going to mars).

The day that NASA expenditures are even a small slice of the federal budget, then you have a case. Today they aren't even 1%, and I guarantee I can identify much more pointless things that the government spends much more money on that provide zero benefit to most of us.

Fixed it.

Again, I'm not calling 'liar', but aren't we just at the stage where we are hearing what 'they' want us to hear.

Let's say there is water. OK. There's 'soil', too.

What is the purpose of that mission? Honestly.

Please don't say: "an alternative planet in case man destroys this one".

Thanks

He's a bad influence on our obese children, what with his belly that shakes like a bowl full of jelly. Furthermore, allowing thousands of children to sit on his lap may be a symptom of pedophilia. And a sleigh pulled by reindeer? That's so 1600s.

I would suggest a thorough image revamp, replacing Santa by Ms. Claus, represented by a trim black woman. The sleigh will of course be replaced by a Prius. Requests for gifts will be supervised by child protective services, Ms. Claus will be seperated from the children by bulletproof glass and communicate via intercom. Text messaging directly to Ms. Claus will also be made available.

It's also nice to know if it is decided to send some humans there.

Would it make a difference to you if life was discovered on Mars, or some other planet?

I can think of very few things more profound than learning about the existence of life beyond this planet, although I believe that the Universe is teeming with life.

Best,

Wow, lots of what ifs but none mean anything.
So what if mars supported some sort of microbial life once. How would that affect us except when we were playing trivial pursuit or something?
I don't give a rats butt about knowing something that makes people "feel good". Profound means nothing except maybe a warm fuzzy feeling for some. It doesn't help us at all. It doesn't solve any problems. It doesn't feed us or shelter us or improve our standard of living. it makes someone feel good. Bah. That only displays how weak and insecure our race is.

Why in the world would we send humans there? The only thing that would accomplish would be to spend and incredible amount of money. Nasa wants to go to mars so they can justify their existence and justify their jobs. There would be absolutely no benefit to mankind if we sent men to mars. Just the opposite, it would be an unimaginable waste of resources.

Men going to mars is not going to unlock the secrets of the universe. It's not going to change anything. it's not going to solve anything.

Ya want a national space program? Fine, but let the finding be voluntary. Put a box on the 1040 form for people to donate money to fund the space program, if they WANT TO. I don't.

There are better and more important things to do with my money, like let me keep it.
NASA's 2009 budget request is $17,614 BILLION dollars.
Last year (2007 vs 2008) their budget was increased by OVER $1 BILLION.

For what?
it is a government funded welfare program for science and it accomplishes almost nothing.
If all they wanted to do was to set up a government science and development program they could do that an accomplish many times more successes with significantly less money.

Hang on, it's going to be a bumpy ride.

"I have a bad feeling about this".

sammyg2 08-01-2008 10:48 AM

Me if I were President: "How much would it cost to find out if there are some ice crystals mixed in with the dirt on the martial pole?"
NASA director:
Oh, about $20 or $30 billion".

Me if I were President: "Are you out of your freaking mind?"

sammyg2 08-01-2008 10:59 AM

And for the record, they didn't find water. They found traces of ice.
Ice that if warmed enough to go through a phase change into liquid would evaporate float away into the universe.

They didn't find an ocean, or lake, or river. They found traces of ice crystals. Oh wow.

Now for all you profound lovers of the quest for knowledge:
What is a tail of a comet made of?
I'm waiting.

Next question: If is likely that a comet has come in contact with mars sometime in the last billion or so years? No waiting for that one, the answer is yes. It is very likely.

Next question:
Knowing that the Martian polar caps are below freezing all the time, wouldn't it make sense that a comet struck the planet or at least part of the tail did, depositing ice crystals which evaporated away everywhere except for a few remnants on the poles? Again, the answer is an obvious yes.

See how easy that was to solve?
Please PM for my address so you will know where to send my check for $20 billion, or you can just use paypal. Thanks.

Oh, and sorry for ruining your profound warm and fuzzy feeling.

trekkor 08-01-2008 11:04 AM

But, we have water here...
