Ex-Cheerleader in Afganistan is a big hit!
Woman after my heart...
~~~~ On Easter, this ex-cheerleader was watching a road that lead to a NATO military base when she observed a man digging by the road. She engaged the target... she shot him. Turned out he was a bomb maker for the Taliban and was burying an IED that was to be detonated when a US patrol walked by 30 minutes later. It would have certainly killed and wounded several soldiers. The interesting fact of this story is the shot was measured at 725 yards. She shot him as he was bent over burying the bomb. The shot struck him in the butt blowing into the bomb which detonated. He was blown to pieces. The Air Force made a motivational poster of her.
Great story, he may have been dead before he heard the shot but it really doesn't make any difference, mission accomplished!!
When you can kill at 725 yards and do a mean cartwheel...you don't have to "blend in."
Too bad the motivational poster is grammatically fuched-up.
I'm calling BS on the poster and the story. Starting in 1996, the US Army started offering a sniper course specifically for Airmen. In 1999, the USAF added their own school, called CPEC (Close Precision Engagement Course).(2) CPEC is the only DOD course that trains female sharpshooters.(1) The first female sniper, a graduate of CPEC, was SrA Jennifer Donaldson in 2001.(2) As of 3/07, the USAF had seven "sharpshooters".(2) (They do not officially use the term sniper.)(3) The only one who is confirmed to be an ex-cheerleader is A1C Ashley-Ann Cady. Cady is assigned to the 824th Security Forces Squadron of the 820th Contingency Response Group stationed at Moody Air Force Base in Valdosta, Ga. She has served two stints in Iraq, and is scheduled for a third deployment. (3) (1) arguard.org (2) eielson.af.mil (3) airforceots.com
Yes, this sounds bogus.
You got it from here, I'm guessing. http://www.americanconservativedaily.com/2008/06/cheerleader-sniper/ Which attributes it as one of those "a [unnamed] friend told me" stories. I'd like to see some Air Force confirmation.
Whether a female sniper actually got a confirmed kill or not is irrelevant, as there are female 'snipers'(albeit only a handful of wingwipers) and they do deploy to combat zones. There are some great female shooters out there. If you take away the humping umpteen miles with full ranger ruck out of the equation (Which the USAF role does not require), a female would probably be just as good in the role as a man. However, actual snipers- be they Army or Marine Corps- deploy to the field with the full infantry field kit and then some.
I would surely HOPE that no female troop would ever deploy to the field(read that the perimeter, as that's as far as the USAF snipers go) with lipgloss and diamond earings. I cannot possibly see any NCOIC allowing that sort of wanton stupidity. My problem with women in the military is the co-ed nature of their service. It creates all kinds of shenanigans, jealousy, favoritism, dealing with PMS(and general over-emotional behavior), false allegations of sexual harassment, prostitution(yes, prostitution) etc, etc. I personally feel female units should be segregated as all-female units to avoid the stupidity that is inevitable in co-ed units. But it will never, ever happen. Women in the military is just a fact of life nowadays. So everyone should just get used to the idea. |
There are definitely some female sharpshooters. I've read a few articles on them.
I think people are calling BS on A) deploying with diamond earings and lip gloss(which is a monumentally stupid act) and or B) that one got a confirmed kill at 725 meters by shooting a guy through the ass (Which would be a bad shot, quite frankly) and then blowing up the bomb. Explosive devices don't normally explode from being shot. There needs to an electrical current present to detonate plastic explosives, which is what most mines use as far as i know. |
Quite a few IED made from old artillery shells...
Lots of folks deploy with jewelry...but the photo was likely posed. Most folks don't deploy with fancy cameras either.
A regular rifle bullet won't set off an artillery shell either. A tracer could set off some kind of rigged IED using black powder, but most likely not high explosives. Of course, snipers don't use tracer rounds anyway. M852 is the preferred poison our guys use nowadays. |
