Finally got a cell phone.

Work issued me a Blackberry Pearl today. A bit of a jump for a guy that never really had a cell phone before. I am sure the IT guys will have to spend days getting everything to talk to each other, and I will take even longer to figure out how to use it...:D

How the heck do you change the ring tone on this thing? Seems like a simple request that is hampered by a overly complex piece of hardware.

Oh Haha 08-04-2008 04:11 PM

Congratulations Shawn!!

Did the IT fellas give you a manual with the BB?

If you scroll through the cute little pictures on the screen using the cute little wheel on the side of te device, you will see one that indicates"options". Now push in on the wheel. That should open that category and then you should be able to see ringtones or something similar.

Mine says change options.

Whenever I get a new piece of technocrap I spend an evening with the owner's manual. Another option is to contact another employee that you feel comfortable asking and get some help from them.

I thought I checked the options icon but I will look again.

I just got six e-mails and my calender, tasks and contacts updated. Seems to be working then. Been goofing around on it tonight. Pretty cool little techware.

Also found out I am getting my PC at work upgraded to a vid card with dual digital outs. I will be plugging in a 24" and a 19" LCD monitor. I love working for number one! :D

You work for WalMart?

My first phone was a blackberry from IBM about 3 years ago, I wish I could remember a simpler life now. It does remain in the drawer in the kitchen at night and on the weekends however.

Don't we all?;)

One thing I was told be my Blackberry owning co-workers is NOT to answer e-mails immediately on your BB. If you do, you will condition your co-workers or bosses to expect an immediate response. Good luck.

I know how you feel. I got my first cell phone about 6 months ago (and I'm 47). I didn't want one, I don't need one, and I don't want anyone calling me on my time.

However, I got sick of the badgering and as I passed the kiosk at Costco, I decided to look into it. I got one.

I actually like having it but the beauty of mine - nobody's got my number (except a rare few).

I have huge thumbs, versus extremely tiny keyboard... I cannot possibly answer E-mails immediately on my BB. :D

Good point though.

Man, you ain't kidding on this statement!!!!!!

I don't like to let emails sit for very long due to MY want of information or an answer ASAP when I ask for something.

Since using a BB, I have conditioned myself to wait 5-10 minutes to respond. Sometimes I take a bit longer but I always answer the same day if I can give an intelligent, helpful answer. I can't stand sending an email and not getting a reply for days unless that person is out of the office. In that case, they should have their freakin' 'out of office reply" turned on.

I deal with customers as well as other employees in my job so some people do get priority over others.

Shawn--this thread has some helpful tips for BB users.

I got one in January (I'm 45). Iy'd hilarious how many people think you can't survive without one. Umm, humanity made it millions of years before this, likely helped by the fact we weren't trying to drive, walk, or hunt mastodon while talking and texting.

I had a funny exchange with an operator when I changed phone companies for my landline. RThey asked if I wanted their cell-phone service, and I said "Nope - I hate the idea of always being at everyone's beck and call." "You don't have to turn the phone on." "So, you're suggesting I pay for the service, just not use it? I'm not using it now for free!"

What actually made me get it was I bought the BMW around then and it has Bluetooth and I really wanted to try it out.

For the last couple months my phone stays in my home office desk Friday-Sunday. It's very liberating. Cell phones have put us all on 24/7 work weeks. I refuse to wear a stupid bluetooth ear piece and thus drives have become a phone free experience as well :)

Now remember, don't hold it near your head when you talk or you'll fry your brains. :)

I see you know how to use a computer. Did you know that we have air-conditioning in most of our homes now! We have even reduced a supercomputer to the size of a laptop. What will they think of next.:D:D

In the great words of Ash Wesley (Bruce Campbell)...It's a trick, get an axe.

I kinda like being able to be reached if there is a problem with the kids....or my wife is out shopping (for me) and needs to ask me a question. i'd rather be called on my cell (except telemarketers) than get home at 7pm and someone has left me a message on my home phone with their daytime #. Like I'm going to remember to call them back.

thrown_hammer 08-06-2008 04:43 PM

I have the auto power on/off set up so it turns on at 7AM and shuts off at 7PM automatically. That's kinda cool.

It's a neato little gadget, but I sure the heck wouldn't pay for it out of my own pocket.
