Don't let the ladies in your life get black henna

This is just an FYI post. My wife is from India, and this was this mornings coffee talk....

For those that don't know, henna is the smashed leaves of the henna plant. It is used in India for make designs on womens hands before celebrations (see photo below), and to dye their hair. In the past 10 years or so, this Indian tradition has taken off in the West. Every vacation spot/mall seems to have someone offering henna. 'Henna tattoos' or 'temporary tattoos' is what they are called.

The problem with this is that the majority of the time, this is NOT natural henna. It is 'black' henna. It has been augumented with chemicals to make the color soak in faster and become much darker. Natural henna is a dark muddy green or reddish brown color, not black.

Why should you care? Because the chemicals in black henna can blister some peoples skin, and lead to scaring. Its ok to get a henna tattoo, as long as its 100% natural henna. If the people offering this don't know, or are unclear about this, don't get it!

I know, I know....as if you didn't have enough to worry about.

Thanks for the heads-up but for some reason I don't think that's going to be a problem for me.

My wife once had footprints hennaed on the soles of her feet.

Weird.

Henna isn't permanent (unless it scars).
