Phelps - WTF? Is he part dolphin, or what?

3 for 3 gold. Amazing!

nostatic 08-11-2008 09:44 PM

and down into 1:42 for the 200. Ridiculous.

Zef 08-12-2008 03:18 AM

Genetic wooes...!!!?

lendaddy 08-12-2008 04:43 AM

Size 14 feet and double jointed knees help.

URY914 08-12-2008 05:30 AM

He does move like a fish when seen with the underwater camera shots.

sammyg2 08-12-2008 06:32 AM

They said he eats 7000 calories a day, more whoen training hard and he still can't gain weight. he trains so hard that he burns all that food.
He isn't part fish, he's an incredibly talented incredibly hard working individual who has earned every single medal he's gotten. Good for him. I hope he gets all of them.
BTW, anyone remember mark Spitz? He won a gold medal in every (individual) event he entered in the 1972 Olympics, and to set a new world record in every one of the individual events he competed in. The only reason Phelps has a chance to get more gold medals that Spitz at a single Olympics is that whoen Spitz was competing they didn't have the 50 meter event. He only entered 7 events and won 7 gold medals.
Phelps has a shot at 8 medals and I hope he repeats the success that Spitz had.

This morning they played an interview with Spitz and asked him whoy he wasn't at the games watching. he said "I'd love to be there but no one invited me". Kind of an over-sight, don't ya think?
If I were the US Olympic committee I'd be at his doorstep with a plane ticket. This is history and Spitz should be there no matter how it turns out.

Here's a quote from Spitz. no one said he got his 9 gold medals and 10 world records for being humble:

Quote:

According to a report released by Agence France Presse (AFP) wire service, Spitz felt snubbed about not being asked to attend the 2008 Olympics to watch current swimming great, Michael Phelps, attempt to break his record of 7 gold medals. In the article, he is quoted as saying, "I never got invited. You don't go to the Olympics just to say, I am going to go. Especially because of who I am....I am going to sit there and watch Michael Phelps break my record anonymously? That's almost demeaning to me. It is not almost—it is.". Spitz also says he could have won 8 gold medals if given the chance. "I won seven events. If they had the 50m freestyle back then, which they do now, I probably would have won that too," he said. And Spitz thinks Phelps will succeed, "he's almost identical to me. He's a world-record holder in all these events, so he is dominating the events just like I did," Spitz said. "He reminds me of myself."

Did anyone see the interview with his mom? He was a hyper kid that loved to swim so she would drop him off at the pool to mellow him out. Then when he was eleven one of the swim coach's came to her and said "we need to start getting ready for the Olympics" and she said "your kidding me!".

The Answer...
Mark Spitz

The Question...
What does a judge do at a spitting contest?

RKC 08-12-2008 07:25 AM

Phelps speed is amazing. I look with awe at the guys on my Masters swim team who can break 1:50 in the 200 - and that's yards NOT meters. To do a 1:42 over 200 meters without an outboard motor is just unthinkably fast....he's actually making rideable waves others could draft on if they were near enough to him!

York 08-12-2008 10:06 AM

He is tall with long arms, strong, fit, and according to the spot on TV all that he has done in the last 4 years is swim, eat and sleep. He makes it look easy. I am guessing that he will really benefit ($, etc.) from all that hard work now, as he should. It takes me 2 min to swim 100 meters.

peppy 08-12-2008 01:22 PM

He is 6'4" with a 30" inseam.

Just a matter of time before the doping talk starts.

By the French no doubt.

The size 14 shoes probably doesn't help that much. My son wears 13 and is slow as heck in the pool. Phelps is just extremely coordinated.

trekkor 08-12-2008 09:52 PM

What's his speed ( mph ) in the water?

watching him in the relay right now. the guy is unreal, to be that much in a class by yourself, againstg other world class athletes, is incredible. I'm not sure I've ever seen anything quite like it!

200 meters in 1:42 is about 4.38 miles/hour.

Mr Spitz did all these things without the benefit of a super duper suit or a pool specifically designed for speed. He also did all that stuff in Munich while terrorists were holding and killing Israelis, that was probably not too much of a distraction.

When I was a kid, we went to the club where he trained to swim. It is probably less than a mile from where I grew up

URY914 08-13-2008 05:50 AM

The guy eats a 10,000 calorie diet every day. He is a swim machine.
They showed what he eats for breakfact this morning on FoxNews and it would feed a family of four. +2500 calories for one meal.
