Home Depot told to be nice to day laborers

http://www.knbc.com/news/17183208/detail.html

"Home Depot, Others Required To Make Day Laborer Shelters

LOS ANGELES -- Big-box, home-improvement stores in Los Angeles will have to set aside space for day laborers under an ordinance passed by the City Council on Wednesday.

When the ordinance takes effect -- the mayor has to sign it, and most city laws take effect 30 days afterward -- it will apply to stores such as The Home Depot that have 100,000 square feet or more, or any structure where 250,000 square feet or more of warehouse floor area is added.

The shelters must be easily accessible and include drinking water, bathrooms, tables, seating and trashcans. The stores may be required to work with Los Angeles police in developing a security plan, according to the unanimous vote by the 15-member lawmaking body."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I think they should be allowed to build a corral, put the day labor in there, and rent them by the hour or day. Let HD get some revenue from this!

It could be even easier than that.

Have Greyhound put in a terminal with subsidized one-way tickets home.

Man, is there not anyone left in government who will not turn their head to this crap?

I highly doubt Villaragosa will not sign this.

I also love the part about "their basic rights". Wish I had rights....

Villagrosa, Newsom, and Nancy Pelosi, we have it all.

A vote for any Democrat is a vote for Nancy Pelosi

Legal immigrants don't hang out on corners looking for jobs. I have a relative that works for ICE in enforcement - they have been PROHIBITED from addressing problems like this.

I agree Jim, for some reason this is a political hot potato. HD spends a lot of money hiring people to keep the day laborers away from teh front of the store, and to keep them from harassing the customers.

I think this is a horrible idea.

Talk about idiocy? We'll send our troops thousands of miles for a [fill in adjectives here] war to "defend our security" but won't lift a finger at home? Give me a freaking break!

Which minority owned, government subsidized construction company will get the (highest) bid to build these comfort stations for the day laborers?

Stir stir...

Na, you're not thinking like a Cali politician!

There will be 10 companies that bid. 1 will be minority owned. They will have the highest bid, probably by 5%.

You now know which one will get this contract...

If it were up to me there would be a $10, 000 fine for for hiring an illegal alien and a loss of business licence, and I would ENFORCE IT!
Then there wouldn't be a need for day laboroer corrals.

Can you expand on "PROHIBITED"? WTF are they there for then?

Illegal is illegal is illegal, except if you're a mexican sneaking into the US. I have a friend from the chek republic who cannot get his extended family members into the US LEGALLY!!

Wake up folks, it's broke, time to fix it.

Brad, the best I can do is relate the context of a discussion with my relative. I was rather taken aback by the statement that they were prohibited from doing roundups at known concentrations of illegals. It is complicated how the story went, but basically when INS was wrapped into Homeland "Security" politics became a big deal both nationally and inter-service. The word I got was (and I'm translating here) only operations that could round up 100 or more at a time could be conducted. Sounded like career ladder-climbing to me. Who knows what strategy is at play, but big roundups have the greatest chance of a media/sig backlash, whereas cleaning up Home Depot, Lowe's, and the street corners have the greatest chance of making real progress.

I thought that Home Depot already had to do this? Each HD that I go to, has a building for day laborers, but they go unused and they hang around the edge of the property anyway. The one in Woodland Hills even runs a service to try and match laborers to employers.

Does this mean that HD has to build another building that won't get used?

Not all of them have the buildings. For example, the Burbank one does not.

Currently, this will only apply to new stores, but I am sure they will try to change that as well.
