Micro wave dangers ?

I have been informed ..and did a little bit of research, that micro waves ( like in your kitchen) are detrimental to our heath. By this I mean it does some thing to the food to make it a challenge to the body......................
Thought I would take this to the Borg of thought and see who knows what.
Thanx in advance !

Heard all kinds of stuff, but nothing proven (other than chemicals leaching from "microwave safe" plastic cookware). If concerned, dump your microwave and get a convection oven. Fits in the same space and cooks better.

My microwave turned me into a newt.

nostatic 08-17-2008 08:44 PM

but you're better now.

though tabs doesn't think so...

But, More to the PT, I know I can change tools....(oven ) But does it in fact change foods to a more unusable state or dangerous slant for consumption ?
That is where I would like to direct this thread -to those who know.

No. Only danger is if you stick your face to the window while the food goes round and round. If it makes you feel better wait about 10 seconds before getting close to it and opening the door. The faraday cage does a pretty good job at keeping the bad stuff from you.

I don't have any information about microwaves changing food in a way that is detrimental to our health.

But, although it might make him feel safer waiting 10 seconds before opening the oven in that time the microwaves would have travelled almost 2 million miles.
Since microwaves aren't very inclined to bounce around inside the oven about 3.7 billion times after it's turned off, I'd say he's safe ;)

I got the impression that he wasn't concerned about the microwaves themselves, but what physical/chemical changes they made to the food while cooking.

As long as you're body is not naturally allergic to steam, you'll be OK with microwaved food...it doesn't manipulate any other parts of the food except the water trapped inside.

Now, an older microwave might break down other molecules (if the waveguide and/or power supply have aged), but anything recent and maintained will only touch the water and nothing else.

You are going to die of something. Be the 1st to die from microwave exposure and go down in history!

....man I'm in a crappy mood today. :D

It's understandable, you're under a lot of stress.

Fay is gonna kill you dead and eat your house soon, it makes people grumpy. :p

looneybin 08-18-2008 07:10 AM

I think the only bad thing that a microwave does to your health is those tasty burritos it makes MMMMMMM

afterburn 549 08-18-2008 07:10 AM

OK ,You guys are not paying attn. Pazuzu is the only person understanding the Q.
If you DO NOT know the issue I am addressing here on the Borg please refrain..
If You do not any thing about this please feel free to tell the world.
If You do a little research on this there is a camp that states the food M.W. is not a good thing.
There is always some one with their agenda...just the facts please

Hell, I pray for a cane to level this place. I'd move into a nice condo and be driving a 997. :)

So you're not talking about microwaves? ;)

afterburn 549 08-18-2008 07:36 AM

Not exactly, The so called damage they supposedly to to food to be consumed ..

looneybin 08-18-2008 08:02 AM

I suppose if the food was a live chicken or squarrel, then yes, it would damage the food (if dead is damaged).
All a microwave does is excite the water molocules by causing them to vibrate at the frequency of the radio waves, & that causes friction of the molocules which causes them to heat up - now i'm going to go and enjoy my burrito :)

Pazuzu 08-18-2008 08:16 AM

Correct. any modern $50 microwave is so tuned that it will only affect the water molecules, and nothing else (each molecule has a characteristic frequency that affects it). When the water molecules are excited, they turn into steam, nothing more (just like boiling water in a pot).

Old RadarRange monstrosities probably are dangerous, between having a poorly built Faraday cage and bad waveguide tuning, which means they're exciting (irradiating) molecules other than water...that could be dangerous to your health.

Exactly. It's true that, for example, you won't get as many vitamins and minerals out of a carrot cooked in the microwave vs. a raw carrot, but that's because the microwave cooked the carrot... not because there's anything fundamentally detrimental about the method of cooking.

cashflyer 08-18-2008 10:30 AM

Since a microwave only excites the water molecules, then your food is effectively cooked by steam?

onewhippedpuppy 08-18-2008 10:33 AM

I hear they're bad for poodles.
