But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.'

how do you feel that the #1 name for baby boys in the U.K. is Mohamed?

In 1907, everybody was worried about the huge influx of Irish, Italians and Eastern Europeans. They had different religions, different languages, different cuisines.

And what happened? Can you imagine America without the Roman Catholic Church? Pasta and Pizza and St. Patrick's Day? Let history take its time. I for one like Thai, Chinese and Mexican food, culture, etc. Don't get so jumpy. The second and third generations will be from here/for here. Is it really human nature to assume otherwise? And, on the flip side, is it really human nature to expect an immigrant of 30 or 40 years of age to speak more than a little pidgin English?

Middle Easterners? I for one don't mind the self-selecting, adventure seeking, freedom seeking immigrants from there either. Let the ones who like the way they are living stay there and the young, dynamic, daring ones come here.

To be an immigrant is to be bold, hopeful and strong. All things I would wish our country to be in the 21st Century,

Today's America is like a fast food drive-thru. "Welcome to America, how can I help you?" Immigration and diversity is what made our country great, but we need our modern immigrants to assimilate and become Americans. Illegal immigrants that live in "little Mexico" communities are contrary to this goal, and further divide our country.

While that is sort of true, we still have little Italys and Chinatowns and nobody complains, because they are old and quaint and most of the immigrants are gone. Same thing will happen to little Mexicos or Havanas or Meccas - just give it a generation or so....

demand NO special provisions at the DMV..manuals printed in Apache or Crow...

I missed the Italian & Eastern European language schools.

RKC, I hope that is the case. However, there seems to be a more significant effort to seperate the culture, or force foreign culture upon Americans. Such as Spanish speaking in schools, or Muslim prayer times. It all seems contrary to our goal of one America.

Foolishness! I repeat, where are the Italian or Chinese language schools. LaRaza is a far cry from The Italian American Social Club.

My children's schools don't allow Muslim prayer times, nor teach in Chinese, and I'd bet yours don't either. I'm not worried about the weirdo fringes - after all, I can go see Amish people in horse and buggy AND the remnants of the "Michigan Militia" within 100 miles of downtown Chicago. Yes, from time to time, those fringe elements make the news, but they don't have a hope of changing our core culture....still we let them live since they are no true threat to our way of life.

Don't be so worried. Travel a bit. There are A & W's within site of the Pyramids - things are going our way - the American Way. Most Muslim mothers don't want their daughters growing up in Saudi Arabia any more than we do, hence the emmigration to Europe.

I don't worry about the strange exceptions to the rules any more than I worry about 8ft tall basketball players needing big doors in their houses or being unable to fit into hardtop Porsche 911's.

This might come as a shock, but cities all over the SW have Spanish speaking, publicly funded schools, DL tests in multiple languages, govt documents in multiple languages.
