mother in law story..i am very grouchy.
ok, i love my MIL. i have her back. many, many times over, she has been screwed by a contractor. one time, a carpet guy ordered too little material and ended up with a puzzle project fitting tiny pieces in the hallway. he tried to pull a faded carpet pad out that looked used too. i slammed him. she paid the guy, before i could stop him. hallways = hightraffic, need solid carpet pieces.
then there was the guy that remodeled her bathroom. holy crap. i just finished re-sheet rocking the tub area. he used half inch white board. the brother in law leaned into it and went thru the wet wall. my MIL was born and raised in taiwan. she is smart but doenst have the best skills at listening to english and reading contracts. i told her NEVER EVER SIGN A CONSTRUCTION CONTRACT until i read it. i thought i was clear. well anyways, she calls me in a panic. i go over there, and i see her roof all dismantled. they are roofing...o-oh. they apparently showed her some lifetime warranty skylights that she agreed to, but installed some made in china, 10 year warranty, junk that you get at the local store. plastic mostly. i hesitated but asked her to see the contract. it basically said, install two skylights... damn, i hate to see the nice lady ripped off. she wants me to write a letter, or talk to the foreman. i dont have a leg to stand on. she doenst even know the name/model of the box she saw before. any ideas? i cant take a deduction. i think he offered a letter stating that he will warranty the skylight personally, but he could go out of business in five years. so am sitting here about to crack a beer, all pissed off. here comes my bro in law. he walks in and says, "i am here to grab the playstation3. my friend wants me to finish metalgear4". i barely nodded at him, but i asked, "why didnt you read the roofing contract?" he said, " my mom takes care of it". i would throw him out. PISSED

Education is expensive.
In this case the cost of a education is 2 crappy sky-lights.

Ask the foreman if he will let you go buy better skylights in the same size and bring them to his crew to install in place of the junk ones.
Even if they've already installed the junk skylights, get a price from him for taking them out and dropping in the better ones. Even if they've already flashed them and put the new shingles on that area of the roof, it wouldn't be a huge deal. If he absolutely refuses to do it, just let it drop, but get them to leave a couple of extra bundles of shingles with her when they finish the job... they usually order plenty and have some overage. They may be planning on leaving extras for her anyway for future repairs that could be needed. If they balk at leaving extras, just find out the specs on them and go buy a couple yourself. Then after this guy has finished and cleared out, call another roofer to come give you a price to install the better skylights, and let her decide if it's worth it to her. You/she could maybe sell the junk ones on Craigslist, but she might have to eat them.

Follow this advice: "NMP" Not My Problem. I wouldn't get involved if repeated attempts to help are ignored.
