Jock Itch...how does it spread?

On the college football post, Mule posted an article saying that the USC team is suffering a jock itch epidemic, attributed to a new style of garment worn under football pants.

So, any of our M.D. board members care to weigh in? How does jock itch spread?
It is a fungus, right???

Just go buy some Zeasorb (non-pres. powder) and you'll be fine in a few days.

Those undergarments were made in Baton Rouge. Mule has stock in that company.

People (and everything else in this world) are covered with bateria and fungus spores. all the time. While being in the same locker room may increase the amount of contact it isn't necessary to become exposed.
The skin is an amazing organ and it protects us from all those invisible creepy crawlies, until we do something to it that makes it incapable of protecting us.
Prolonged exposure to moisture causes swamp foot and jungle rot, cuts and abrasions can lead to infections, wearing poorly designed undergarmets that do not breathe can do both.
Moisture along with chaffing harms the skin and allows the fungus to grow and harm us.

that'll be a gazillion dollars.
Sincerely, Dr. sam

Sammy covered it well,
discontinue wearing the same pair of undies for weeks at a time,
dry the area, I mean dry
you can go powder or something like OTC Tinactin,
oh..depending on exactly you do have growing down there..
some 'rashes' are contagious (ringworm) ..
so wash your hands often.

You busted me! Itchy & Scratchy brand compression, moisture wicking sports undergarments! Wait till my line of diarrhea inducing toilet paper comes out!

Mule 08-21-2008 11:36 AM

If they got jock itch in LA humidity, let us get 'em down here. They'll have whole limbs rotting off!

I dunno, we had a particularly bad spell a couple of weeks ago when the humidity hit 30% !

Mule 08-21-2008 12:12 PM

I don't think it's ever been 30% here.

Jagshund 08-21-2008 12:26 PM

Do I really have nothing better to do than read about genitals? What if this is as good as it gets?

I grew up in Socal and moved to South Carolina for my senior year in HS. I didn't even know I could sweat before I got to my first football practice right in the middle of August, South Carolina style.

The air was so moist I might as well have been Phelps.

The amount of skin skivvies I became aware of still staggers me. Do a search on impataigo:eek:

What the SoCal kids have is not JI, it's an STD.:)

RWebb 08-21-2008 06:10 PM

it could be that this particular fungus can aerosolize spores - I dunno

but direct contact could easily spread it - people often touch their clothing with their feet while putting it on or taking it off - that would transfer the fungus to & from the floor where others pick it up

Now for you creepy thought of the day...

The reason it is so hard ot get rid of a fungus infection is that the fungus sends down hyphae (like a simple version of a plant's root) deep down into your body. Every time you kill the surface part of the fungus, the hyphae are still there, ready to sprout back up.

Enjoy dinner! The hyphae sure will....
