Is CL Autos this bad everywhere??

Sorry, prolly too late (for me) to be posting this but..

My son trashed my Blazer last winter and has since taken over the replacement vehicle what with starting Tech School and finally gotten a job.. time for another in the stable.. I've been prowling the CraigsList auto postings looking for a winter beater for a while.

Anyhow, I was initially suckered into responding to an ad that came back as "I'm Lt. blah blah stationed in the UK." OK, instant scam alert! It was really quite funny when you looked at it. NOW It seem like there must be at least of 50+ of these things posted every day (along with the "drive a car for free" and "gov. repo'd" ads). For example they usually lists a 2000+ vehicle for ~$2500 and often they have some random garbage attached to the end. Are there really that many people in the world that don't have a life? Is this the same everywhere? Isn't there a way that CL could strip all that up front?

I'm thinking of George's old HDDTTWA articles (might be a local reference)?

Yes, same crap here.

I would be more concerned about the number of suckers that send these scammers money. Your family, neighbors, friends, fellow countrymen. That's the scary part. If the scam were not successful, it would've fallen off the vine long ago.

I've been looking for trucks

I found this gem today:

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/cto/808521691.html

After I sent an e-mail asking some questions like, why is it 25% of value and can I look at it I get this e-mail reply:

Quote:

The truck is already at the shipping company in Morton,IL sealed and ready for the shipping. I'm very busy with my job and I'm left out of the town so I can't meet in person with you so this is the reason why I chose to sell my truck over the internet. The total price that you will have to pay for the truck is $5,200. The truck has 32,364 miles
Here's how our deal works :
In order to complete this deal the payment must be sent to ebay. As soon as they receive the payment will notify me to start with delivery. After that you will receive all information about delivery so you can be able to track your shipment online.ebay will hold your payment until you receive and inspect the truck (you have 5 days for inspection) If you will find the smallest problem with the truck you will ship it back on my expense and ebay will send you your full amount back.
You can see more pics at: http://s526.photobucket.com/albums/cc344/mariakas/
Please let me know if you still want to move forward with this deal so I can initiate a transaction with ebay?
Looking forward to hearing from you..

Yeah, let me send you my money through e-bay... :D

Try an auto auction. Do you know anyone with a dealers license who you can tag along with? A friend who goes to the auctions regularly said he has had to run some trucks through SEVEN times before getting a single bid. It is a buyer's market right now for big trucks and the auction is the place to get 'em (less than) half-price.

My father just sold his 2005 Jeep Rubicon and 2007 22' travel trailer on Craigslist to local buyers and didn't have a single problem. He got his asking price and didn't have to deal with any spammers, losers, etc...

Where he's located may have something to do with it. If his Craigslist city page isn't in a heavily read/populated venue, the scammers/losers may not notice or bother.
