Anyone own an Insinkerator Evolution Excel with "Jam Circuit?"
 

I just installed one of these supposedly top tier models. It was pricey at $300, but when I have to do plumbing, I do the best I can to not have to do it again. The model features something called a "Jam Sensor Circuit."

This is what it says on the box. I could not find the whole text on the Net, even at the manufacturer's site. "Senses when a jam is imminent and automatically engages, increasing the rotational torque of the motor up to 500% while simultaneously pulsing at a rate of 60 times per second. Produces a powerful hammering effect that breaks through the toughest jams before you even notice a problem."

What's weird is when I flip the switch, it sounds like it's stuck for a half a second. It buzzes like an electric motor does when it's frozen then takes off normal. Every other run, it reverses it's rotation, as many of the better models do, and makes the same exact start up noise. I put a whole lemon in the thing to see if it was weak or down of power as a test. I never saw anything go away so fast. However, I can't get used to the start up buzz. After the buzz, I can't even hear the thing run if the water is running (I've always heard not to run a disposer w/o running water, even if it's empty).

I tried a Google with different terms but all I got for 5 pages was sales hits. I'd like to know what the norm is on these things.

Is this how they work? If so, I have to say this thing is a beast, albeit a quiet one.

I remember that there were special heavy duty disposals at the Boy Scouts of America National Jamboree in West Virginia in '97 (about 35k scouts present). They demoed one by having it chew up a bowling ball... no, I am not kidding.

What are you putting down the kitchen sink drain that could jam up a 3/4 to 1hp motor? Seems like a crazy idea to need that much technology for a drain.

Trash goes in the trash or the compost bin.
Any small particles that remain in the sink get flushed down and a very standard disposal will take care of them immediately.

If you have ever had to snake a drain or replace old sewage lines, then the idea of grinding up a bunch of bones, dinner scraps, veggie cuttings etc. to flush down a drain seems risky.

I want one that will double as a tree-chipper.

This one will. I just got of the phone with the Insink tech. Yes, there is a delay when flipping the switch. I'll get used to it.

You folks can compost all you want. I'll just keep using my usual yard waste and not food waste. Food waste brings tons of flies and varmints. City varmints are not cool to have around.
