With names like Massimo, it has to be Italy

How quickly it can all go bad.

No kidding. It wasn't more than a second after I clicked on the link that I couldn't understand a single word they said ;)

This is a freak accident. That happens once in a while, but not very often and not to very many people. Keep it in perspective. We all die. Every one of us.

When I was there in the '80s...they drove very fast like the Germans on the autobahn...but with much less discipline. they would not think twice to pass on the right...or in the median or shouler of the road for that matter.

The POV vehicle in this clip was travelling way too fast for surrounding conditions. Just because you have a clear lane ahead of you doesn't mean "let 'er rip". You have to take the rest of the traffic into consideration. Had they been driving slower, they would have had time to react instead of joining the "dogpile". (Notice all the vehicles to their right with brake lights activated.)

You can tell all of that from the 4 frames per second video?

Yes.

Mothy 08-28-2008 04:38 AM

Blind freddy could tell you that - way too fast for the conditions.

So if you are in the express lane you should drive no faster than the slowest lane on the freeway. hmmmmmm

Turboo934 08-28-2008 07:05 AM

DOT did that 5 years ago, along with Homeland Security taking over transport regs.

Not at all - just drive at an appropriate speed for the conditions. A 50 mph speed difference between your lane and the one beside you gives you no time to react if something goes wrong.
