Thinking of going to Africa... Malawi tribes, tourist trap?

Hi Guys,

My SO wants to go to Africa next year and wants to see the Malawi tribes.

They look fascinating on those National Geographic shows, but I told her that it's probably like Colonial Williamsburg; they dress up for the tourists and then get in their Toyota pickup trucks and call their wives on their cellphones on the way home.

So anybody visit them? I hope my assessment, but I am a born sceptic, especially when it comes to making a buck.

Get the package where you stay with them in thier homes for a couple days. Youu'll never look at your life in the same way again.

st year we went o JKenya and tanzania. Visted two separate Masai Tribes as part ofthe package. OUr objective was wildlife viewing.

Two things were apparaent to me: 1) They were putting a show on for the tourist; and 2) As Kevin notes, after looking at the their life, and others in Africa, you will never look at your life the same way.

The trip was very eye opening at many levels.

Running water is a neat feature, isn't it?

running water, decent paved roads, flush toilets, lights at night, etc.

A facinating place but sad at the same time.
