How is your Neighborhood? Garage Usage.

I have been in my neighborhood since '91. I walk a lot for exercise and I notice that no matter where I go, I see nice vehicles parked on the streets. We are talking about very very new MBs, Jags, high-end SUVs, a few post-air-cooled Porsches, etc.

Whenever the garage doors are open, I could see that the garages are just full of junk (relatively speaking): boxes, treadmills, bicycles, extra fridge, ........

I just feel so bad seeing these new, expensive vehicles getting sun-damaged.

Does anyone use the garage anymore to store cars? The garage was originally invented for cars, correct? Is this just California only?

I was going to start a poll, but I suspect that most Pelican members store their older PCars in the garage.

Those cars you see are mere appliances to the owners.

RWebb 09-01-2008 03:19 PM

and...

Those cars you see are on display by the owners. If they were stuck in a garage, they could not use them to impress the neighbors.

DavidB911 09-01-2008 03:28 PM

I think the only people that use the garage appropriately are the car people. The people with their garages full don't work on the car and complain about how much it costs to fix/maintain or use those values to impress. Oh well, whenever their "nice" car goes on sale, we can get a discount from the sun damage.

I have a 2 car garage and 2 cars go in it always.

Right now my RX7 is in the driveway while my sons E30 is being worked over, once it done the E30 goes in the driveway and the RX7 will reside again next to the E46.

I sometimes wish I had a 3 car garage this way we could have a project bay and parking bays.

Edit**

I agree with the O/P same here in my neighborhood garages packed with "stuff" and cars in the drive.

Same thing around car. I squeeze 3 cars (and a ton of junk) into my 2 car garage. Hopefully more than 1 of them will run this year.

Our attached garage is my wife's. She parks her car in it and the other side is the hot tub. I never do any work in there. I park and work on my toys in a seperate building. Works out nice.

Well, unfortunately, it does not work on me. I do not get impressed anymore; I have not said "Wow" for over 3 decades........must be an age thing!

I do say, "I won't mind driving that SL600 for a week."

Depends on what you classify as Junk ;)

I'm very O.C. - cannot keep junk/stuff around. We donate ALOT of stuff to local charities. The rest goes into the trash.

cab83_750 09-01-2008 04:35 PM

Junk to me are boxes, old gym equipments, dumb- barbells, 'as seen on tv' stuff, kids bicycles.......

:) :) :) as for junk.....

Is that a range/landrover? If not, ignore this. If yes, (from urbandictionary) :)

land rover 170 up, 127 down
1. A poor quality vehicle. The worst vehicle in terms of depedability, corrosion prevention, serviceability and poorly engineering.

2. A vehicle which value depreciates 25% or more when all 4 tires leave the dealers lot. No other vehicle has a poorer depreciation value. A bad investment

3. A vehicle that will get you there(maybe), but you will have to walk home.

4. A vehicle that the body is made from Aluminum. Land Rover bodies do not rust. They corrode, and this is the best thing Rovers do. Land Rovers steel frames rust.

5. A vehicle that is an electrical nightmare.

6. A vehicle that quality is so poor that Ford Motor Company had to buy it. Now they wish they did'nt.

7. A vehicle that parts must be preordered and kept on hand due to the fact that parts are not carried at regular auto parts stored

7. A vehicle that MILF's like.

I saw a cool Landie today on the side of the freeway. The hood was up but that's usual.

I'd rather push a Land Cruiser than ride in a Land Rover. Hell I'd rather dive a Jeep, and they suck too.

#1 Let's go fourwheelin, I just got my Rover running again.
#2 No way man, My Land Cruiser and I are tired of draging your British junk back to town.

We have three cars and a double garage- we always have two cars in the garage, and I dearly wish we had another bay. We are in the minority too, as most folks here are the same- $80k out in the scorching sun and freezing winters, with $500 worth of junk taking up both bays of their garage. I don't get it!

cab83_750 09-01-2008 04:45 PM

Yah all can stop wishing for a 3-car garage. I had a wide 2-car garage; now, I have a wide 3-car garage. Of course, now I wish I have a 4-car garage or a barn. You can never get enough.

You guys remind me nagging wives....." honey, there isn't enough kitchen countertop"

Instead, you guys said " I wish for a 3-car garage....." :) :) :)

I put my wife's miniVan in the garage so that the family can go straight into the house.
I put my Porsche in there, because it is is covered 5 days out of 7.
I put my Audi in the driveway just because I do not have a 3 car garage (boy I want one)...

Most of my neighbors, regardless if they have a 2 or 3 car garage, use the garage for storage and fun stuff (pool table, workout equipment, etc).. They usually get one car in.

I think I am the only one that gets two cars in a 2 car garage...
I do not collect very much junk. If you do not need it, throw it out.....

Cdnone1 09-01-2008 04:56 PM

I've got my 911 and the 911 roller in my garage but everything is jammed around them.
I have to drop my wife or sons off before I pull in and can barely squeeze out of the car once in. If I want to work on something either one of the cars comes out or I do it outside. Here's a pic from tearing down a Boxster engine and you can see some of the shame that is the garage in the background

Right now, there are four cars in my three-car garage.

notfarnow 09-01-2008 05:03 PM

As a general rule, the cars are out in the driveway from April to November. Once the snow starts, they are inside.

My garage is my main workshop, so if I have a project on the go it can be weeks that I can't park in there. If I posted pictures of my garage in its worst state, you guys would think I am a madman.

VaSteve 09-01-2008 05:06 PM

I usually park my E46 and the 911 in the garage. The 911 goes over the lift. The 944 stays on the street (which causes its own problems) with the bike and the tire trailer. The tire trailer might go in my mom's garage over the winter. The trash truck (wife's van) stays in the driveway.

I measure a projects success by how long one of the cars has to stay in the driveway. I did some carpentry in the house and the e46 spent a couple of nights outside since I had sawhorses and the saw set up. I wasn't happy.

Same with car projects. If the 944 has to spend more than a day on the lift, the 911 goes to the e46 spot and the e46 stays outside. I used to be able to swap the 911 and have the e46 park over the lift, but it's hard to get in the passenger side (need to load up the kids).

I'm very meticulous about the garage and the amount of stuff in there. It's my dumping ground only. Periodically, I purge a bunch of stuff I have been keeping. I had been moving this little rack around for 4 years from the old house. Everytime I wanted to trash it, I couldn't do so and it stayed. It was on the curb once and came back. I finally decided to put it out last night. It's gone now. :)

Do you do balancing act as a profession? Or are my eyes deceiving me?

Cdnone1 09-01-2008 05:19 PM

If you are referring to the engine stand, the bucket under the engine is hiding the up right
I am trying to find a balance in life , but certainly not as a profession.
