Corn demand hurts tequila industry

By Chris Hawley, USA TODAY
ZAPOTLANEJO, Mexico — Here in the heart of Mexico's tequila country, where every town has a distillery and the air smells like sweet fermenting molasses, a sign proudly marks the entrance to Miguel Ramírez's farm: "Rancho Ramírez: Producer of Agaves."
But behind the fence, the blue agave plants, the raw ingredient of Mexico's famous tequila, are getting harder to spot. They are being replaced by row after row of leafy cornstalks.

That switch to abandon slow-growing agave plants to cash in on corn, beans and other food crops selling for record prices worldwide could limit the supply of tequila and drive up the cost of a shot or a margarita.

The move is part of an international trend from Idaho potato farmers to Bolivian coca growers as they cut back on their trademark crops in hopes of making big money on corn and grain.

"Corn is where the money is now," Ramírez said, admiring his new crop. "I'm going to get out of agave completely."

Bolivian coca growers, too?

Next thing ya know, Kentucky's number one cash crop (marijuana) will do a changeover, also.

Ethanol makes the liberals feel good.

They don't care if it emits more greenhouse gasses than gasoline.
They don't care if it consumes more energy than it produces.
They don't care if it drives up the cost of food.

It makes them FEEL GOOD!

+1

Ethanol is bad news, and does nothing to address the scope of the problem. We could plant every available inch of land, and still never grow enough. It may be part of a solution, but its not a solution on its own.

Removing the subsidy for Ethanol is a plank in the Republican Party Platform

i would be willing to bet that gets scrapped if they win. another broken promise.

They won't "scrap" it, it will get shot down by the democrat controlled congress.

That's the problem, a president can only get what he wants against opposing members of congress if he caves in and gives them what they want, which is why we have a mandated ethanol percentage now. The democrats would not vote for Bush's energy bill unless he included the ethanol. The only republicans who pushed for it come from states like Iowa. Together they had enough votes to kill anything Bush wanted unless he caved and gave them the free ride on corn. I wonder why they wanted a federal subsidy to go along with the subsidies they already have?
I'm not making that up, it's a matter of public record.

i can't believe how many people are willing to publicly admit that they'd compromise a food source (the most basic of needs) in order to facilitate reduced transportation costs (a lie in itself!).

effing ignorance at it's most extreme.

tell this guy.

we just need to move the early election primaries out of the corn belt and this would all go away.

It is a complete waste of resources.

I can't believe we use corn to produce the stuff. It's a good fuel, but corn is a very inefficient way to get it.

Do some homework and get back to us. Check on things like .... how long did he hold out? How long did they fight over this? how many other things were threatened by the dems if he didn't give in?

Let us know how that turns out.
