Best days to travel-Thanksgiving

My brother is having Thanksgiving with his in-laws so that leaves me with my elderly parents for the holiday.

Then dad gets this bright idea "why don't we visit aunt Helen for turkey day?"

Aunt Helen is one of my favorite people in the world and she is getting up into her 90's so I say sure let's go.

Then I start thinking... Thanksgiving... traveling... oh krap what have I got myself into.

We will be flying from Los Angeles to San Antonio, we are all leaving Tuesday Nov. 25 - I am hoping that won't be too bad.

They are thinking of staying a week Tues. to Tues. however I may be coming back sooner because of work.

Would Saturday after Thanksgiving be a travel nightmare? I presume Sunday is the worst, I could fly back Monday... of just fly back Tuesday with my parents and help them get through the airport.

I have never traveled on Thanksgiving so don't know what to expect.

Thank you PPOT road warriors.

i have travelled from NY to LA, leaving on T-giving morning and returning on Sunday afternoon, at least 4 times in the past 6 years. No problems with any of them. T-giving flight has always been empty and no delays. Same goes for Sunday. No problem, and from what i remember, it was always cheaper to fly on T-giving which is why i did it.

Thursday (T-day) is by far the best day to fly - the airports are pretty empty. Sunday is usually nuts (at least at LAX). I'd avoid that at all costs, along with the Wednesday before.

After checking Tues. to Tues. makes more sense, it is less expensive, and even though they can get through the airport OK without me it usually goes better when I am there with them to help (they are in their 80's).
